Weekly report – 4th of September

It definitely wasn’t a week for the fair weather fisher! Thankfully the miserable weather did not deter the hardened anglers and we have seen some amazing sport here at Burnhouse.

With daddy season in full swing, it’s not hard to imagine what the top fly this week was and it gave anglers the rush of the surface take. For the majority of the week, the fish have been just under the surface, spurring excitement when the larger fish are feeding. One gentleman said, “it was like torpedos were travelling across the water!”

FISH OF THE WEEK- This week’s top spot goes to one of our regulars IAN DON who landed a 13lb rainbow caught using a Greenwell’s spider. Well done, Ian!

Other successful flies were a pink squirmy worm, yellow lure, damsels, sedge, Ally McCoist, Daiwl Bach, hot head damsel, Greenwell’s spider, hot head humongous, silver humongous, black gnat, beetle and a blue flash dancer.

He then went on to net another beauty weighing 8lb 5oz caught using a yellow dancer also on a floating line. Later in the week he safely returned a 10lb rainbow caught using a pink squirmy worm static under a bung. What a week Ian!

ALLAN DOWNIE was ecstatic with his evening session safely returning 3 rainbows all over 7lb caught using a hot head silver humongous on a floating line. Later losing this fly to “a monstrous fish” he played this fish for over 10 minutes and he didn’t get a chance to see it, it stayed strong and deep. “The one that got away“ it’s still there awaiting your next visit.

There were some pretty impressive fish caught this week and I have heard tales of even bigger from our anglers; one gentleman, in particular, caught 2 for 25lb however we don’t have it down on our records so unfortunately, we can’t put a name to this outstanding catch. Please check in with us on your departure so we can keep a good record of the fish caught and your experience with us.

Weekly report – 7th of August

Another week of thunderstorms and high pressure, fish feel the difference in barometric pressure and makes it hard to catch. On Friday evening we saw a spectacular lightning display above the Lochan. Stunning to see but more than a little dangerous for the hardened fishermen who were braving the rain but had to down their rods and run for cover to the cabin. Thankfully, the forecast for the week ahead is more settled and we should start to see the fishing improve.

FISH OF THE WEEK – JONNO MCDONALD netted a beautifully coloured 9lb 9oz rainbow caught on a Dennis the menace buzzer on a floating line.

FLIES OF THE WEEK- The top 3 flies were the Humpy, Kate McLaren and black beetles. Other successful flies were buzzers, black spiders, yellow dancer, hares ears, okey-dokey, pheasant tail nymphs, crunchers, lark and grey,  cat’s whisker and the Burnhouse faithful the Griffiths gnat.

ALLAN DOWNIE had a great day safely returning 4 rainbows caught on a humpy on a floating line.

LEWIS CONNER safely returned 1 caught on a humpy on a floating line.

JONNO MCDONALD safely returned 2 caught on a Denis the Menace buzzer on a floating line. His catch included a stunning 9lb 9oz rainbow.

JIM MARSHALL weighed in one rainbow for 3lb caught on a Kate McLaren on a floating line.

LORNE SMITH safely returned 2 caught on a Kate McLaren on a floating line.

BILL FLETCHER thoroughly enjoyed his day safely returning 3 rainbows and 1 brownie caught on a size 18 black spider on a floating line.

CRAIG MCGEE safely returned 1 caught on a Griffiths gnat on a floating line. Craig had spotted the fish rising in the same place several times and covered the next rise, he was delighted when the fish took his fly right off the surface only a few meters from where he was standing.

GLEN SUTHERLAND safely returned a beautiful brown caught on a yellow dancer on an intermediate line. Unfortunately, he lost a double-figure fish, it’s still there awaiting your next visit.

JAMES ALLERDICE beat his personal best netting a stunning 6lb rainbow caught on a gold head hares ear on a floating line. He could have beaten his personal best again hooking into one of our big doubles however his line snapped. Next time James!

BRIAN MCGREGOR who was fishing a kill ticket netted a 6lb 8oz rainbow caught using a black beetle on a floating line. The fish was in perfect condition and put up such a fantastic fight that he decided to return the fish to the water. Thank you Brian I completely agree that that fish deserved to fight another day it was a prime example of the quality of the fish stocked in Burnhouse.

BILLY HOEHLE safely returned 1 rainbow caught using a lark and grey on a floating line.

WILLIAM FLETCHER weighed in one rainbow for 2lb 10oz caught using a cruncher on a floating line.

MAY ANDERSON safely returned 4 rainbows one over 9lb caught using a size 18 black beetle and a Kate McLaren on a floating line with a slow figure of 8 retrieve.

Unfortunately, our double figure fish escaped the nets this week – over 20 doubles were hooked into but none made it to the net. Could we please ask that anglers use 8lb+ line as there are some very big fish in our water and they all put up an incredible fight. A wee reminder that Burnhouse will be closed on Sunday the 9th of August. We are also closed on a Monday and Tuesday to allow for essential maintenance to be carried out. A huge thank you to all our anglers who braved the weather this week! We hope to see you again soon, preferably in better weather conditions.

Tight lines for the week ahead!

Weekly report – 31st of July

Typical Scottish weather! Anglers were wearing shorts one day and winter warmers the next! The constant change in the weather and air pressure meant that fishing was a little more challenging; perseverance was the key to success! Weekly report – 24th of July

This week it wasn’t just the fishing that has had the anglers talking but also the wildlife of our beautiful Burnhouse loch. It is always a joy to watch our resident red deer grazing along the banks. Midweek we had a flying visit from a regular to our fishery – an osprey. What a spectacular view to see it soaring above the loch looking for a spot of lunch. Beautiful little kingfisher was spotted sitting on his little perch by the waterside that Gary made for him. The Canada geese gosling has been learning to fly. Even the otter visited to teach us a lesson on how to catch the fish. Our anglers thoroughly enjoyed the relaxation of watching nature at its finest whilst doing the sport they love! Burnhouse is so much more than just a fishery, it’s a little escape to the country full of peace, beauty and tranquillity.

ROBERT CHALMERS had a day to remember weighing in 2 fish for 16lb 3oz using size 14 Kate McLaren on a floating line and then went on to safely return a 10lb rainbow. His first fish weighing 10lb put up an incredible 25-minute fight, however, sadly could not be returned to the water.

We say “3” because after an epic fight he safely returned a rainbow estimated to be around 9-10lb and that same fish took the exactly the same fly on his very next cast. Some people say catch and release doesn’t work because once a fish is jagged it stops feeding. Well, I think that theory has just been truly scrubbed!

Well, what a fantastic week we have had! A huge thank you to all of our anglers, we look forward to seeing you again.

Weekly report – 10th of July

Only the brave ventured out in the torrential rain this week however those who did were rewarded. Saturday has seen the best days sport, when in between the showers the fish went into a feeding frenzy, particularly loving the chase – much to the enjoyment of our anglers. Undoubtedly, Burnhouse comes alive after a good shower of rain.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming back some friends from the Cumbernauld British Legion this week who all thoroughly enjoyed their day with us, it was good to see you all and we are delighted you had a good day.

Other successful flies were yellow owls, daddies, coral dancers, green and yellow lures, f*ck ups, orange bugs, orange Fritz, daiwl bachs, hothead damsels, blue flash damsels, and black suspended buzzers.

Burnhouse Lochan is currently undergoing a renovation of the cabin so we are currently unable to provide refreshments, anglers should for the time being bring their own to the fishery.

Please be aware –  all fish over 8lb, tigers and brown trout should be safely returned to the water. We have a set of portable scales, so if you require a weight, signal over to Gary or May and we will happily weigh the fish for you. Please use only barbless hooks and make sure that all fish caught on a catch and release ticket is kept in the water, whilst unhooking and then safely released. These measures are required to prevent any damage, disease or distress to the fish.

Thank you to all our anglers this week, we look forward to your return.

Tight lines!

Weekly report – 3rd of Jul

What a week we have had at Burnhouse Lochan! We had to experience the beauty of the changeable “Scottish summer” weather. The sun has been hiding this week which should have been ideal fishing weather, however, that cold east wind stuck around and kept the fish deep.  Thankfully, later in the week it changed the direction and we got to see some fantastic top of the water action!

FISH OF THE WEEK – we have a tie for top spot this week Mark Love and Alan Downie both catching stunning 12lb blues. Both were safely released to fight another day.

BAG OF THE WEEK – most of our anglers this week have been catch and release however Eddie Hunt weighed in 1 rainbow for an impressive 8lb.

Jamie Renolds on his very first outing to Burnhouse caught 8 on red cheeked buzzers, pink eggs and a floating beatle. He netted a 11lb and 9lb rainbow and also lost another double figure fish. He was so delighted that he extended his ticket because he didn’t want to leave claiming that our fish are the best fighting, he’s ever experienced.

Alan Downie safely released 12 this week on black penal, pink egg and buzzers. His catch included a perfectly conditioned 12lb which he couldn’t stop talking about, he was positively buzzing “that fish looked and fought like a salmon I’ve never seen a trout in a fishery in such an amazing condition! Just stunning!”
