Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report: 12.03.21 – 19.03.21                           

What a crazy but typically Scottish week we have just had! On the Friday anglers were wrapped up warm due to gale force winds, sleet, and snow! They left with freezing hands and wind burned faces! Just a few days later they were wearing shorts and t-shirts and left with sunburn!

Spring is finally in the air! The birds are coupling up, their songs adding to an already relaxing environment. The frogs are making their return to the water to spawn.  The ducks are laying their eggs around the fishery much to the delight of anglers lucky enough to find them and take them home. The bees and other insect life are making their return. However, the most exciting thing, with the temperature rising there has been an abundance of hatches, creating great sport on the nymphs, buzzers and even dries! The fish are hitting aggressively. The rises have been spectacular, especially in the evenings.

FISH OF THE WEEK – This week’s top spot goes to TONY STEEN with a stunning 11lb rainbow, just one of the impressive fish he caught during his evening session. Well done, Tony!

FLIES OF THE WEEK– This week’s top 3 flies were BUZZERS, CORMORANTS and EGGS.

Other successful flies were – Hares ears, blood worms, daiwl bachs, gold & black lures, apps, nymphs, black pennell, silver march brown, Kate McLaren, covid, pink lure, viva, black rabbit, polar bear, millennium bug, orange lures, black dancer, crunchers, hot head damsel, squirmy worms, black & green lure, white rabbit, black leeches, grey gnat, shimmy worms, greenwells spider and a double humpy.

CATCHES OF THE WEEK

• SONIA LEYDEN – Braved the gale force winds, sleet and snow! Her reward was 3 rainbows, including one weighing 6.5lb all caught on cormorants.
• JOHN GILCHREST – The creator of the covid fly, safely returned 8 rainbows and 1 tiger on a mixture of is covid flies.
• GORDON FERGUSON – Safely returned 2 impressive rainbows weighing 8.6lb and 9.17lb, both were caught on cormorants on a floating line. On a return visit he safely returned 4 rainbows, including 1 weighing approximately 10lb, cormorants, covid and buzzers were the successful flies on a floating line.
• STEVEN GOLDIE – Safely returned 5 rainbows, caught using a blood worm, silver March brown and a Kate McLaren all on a floating line. “what a day I’ve really enjoyed myself”.
• IAN DON – Safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using a silver March brown.
• ALLAN DOWNIE – Safely returned 5 rainbows, caught using a black pennell and buzzers all on a floating line. On a return visit he safely returned 6 rainbows and 1 wild brown, all caught using a greenwells spider on a floating line.
• ANDY MCALPINE – Weighed in 1 rainbow for 2.2lb, caught using an olive buzzer on a floating line.
• BRIAN SKINNER – Safely returned 2 rainbows including 1 weighing 8.9lb, caught using an olive nymph on a floating line and a red egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• MARK McGOVERN – Weighed in 4 rainbows for 17.44lb, caught using a cormorant on a floating line and an olive and red apps on an intermediate line.
• JIM THOMSON – Safely retuned 4 rainbows, caught using a buzzer and a daiwl bach both on a floating line.
• EWAN McMEECHAN – Safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using a green and a white egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• JAMES McMEECHAN – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a bloodworm on a floating line.

• REYNER KENNEDY – Safely returned 8 rainbows, caught using a mixture of eggs fished static under a sight indicator.
• GEOFF APPLETON – Safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using an orange lure on an intermediate line.
• GREG HOWE – Weighed in 1 rainbow for 6.5lb and safely returned 1 other, using millennium bugs fished static under a sight indicator.
• LEWIS KIDD – Safely returned 3 rainbows all of a good size.
• DECLAN WINTERS – “I’ve not left yet and I’m already thinking about when I can next return!” He safely returned 11 rainbows including ones weighing 10lb, 9.5lb, 8.5lb and 7lb. An orange dancer, black rabbit, and polar bear all on an intermediate line proving very successful for him. On a return visit he also safely returned 11 rainbows, all caught using buzzers on a floating line. Declan also lost another double figure tiger “These big tigers just keep breaking my heart!” This was the second week running that he has lost one of the big tigers. One day they will make it to your net!
• STEVEN LEYDEN – Safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using a bloodworm on a floating line and an egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• CONNAR LEYDEN – Safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a blood worm on a floating line and an egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• KENNY LOWE – Weighed in 1 rainbow, for 5.6lb caught using a black & gold cats whisker on an intermediate line.
• JOE MURPHY – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a viva on an intermediate line.
• BRIAN McCLUCKIE – Safely returned 1 wild brown and 1 rainbow weighing 10.4lb, both caught using a pink lure on an intermediate line. This is the second week running that Brian has caught a rainbow around 10lb.
• STUART PEACH – Safely returned 2 rainbows and 1 wild brown, all were caught using a black & green lure on an intermediate line.
• STEVEN HALL – A former member of the Scottish banks team safely returned 7 rainbows, caught using a hot head pheasant tailed nymph on a floating line.
• ALAN SMITH – Gave us all something to laugh about! He hooked into a rainbow that took a massive run then about turned and headed towards him at a rate he could not keep with, his only alternative was to run up the hill, not just once but twice! He ended his night with 10 rainbows and 1 tiger, caught on various flies including an olive apps on an intermediate line and buzzers on a floating line.
• IAN PRENTISE – Weighed in 2 rainbows for 8lb, caught using a pink squirmy fished static under a sight indicator.
• BARRY PRENTISE – Weighed in 1 rainbow for 3lb, caught using a red daiwl bach on a floating line.
• JOHN BRYCE – Weighed in 1 rainbow for 4.6lb and safely returned 1 An orange nomad and a hot head damsel both on intermediate lines proving successful for him.
• CHRIS DRAKE – Had a great day out in the sunshine with a few of his colleagues. He safely returned 3 rainbows and 1 wild brown, caught using a nymph with a pink hot head.
• BRUCE DOWDEY – Was not expecting much from his first ever fishing trip, however with some guidance from his friends he was soon into his first fish! And what a first fish it was, a hard fighting TIGER! He also safely returned 2 other rainbows both of a good size. A nymph with a pink hot head on a floating line worked magic for him.
• KEVIN ROONEY – Safely returned 4 rainbows of a good size “my arms killing me! What a scrap!” A green cruncher and a claret cruncher on a floating line proving very successful for him.
• TONY STEEN – Had a brilliant evening session with 6 rainbows to the net including an 11lb, 10lb and 2 at approximately 8lb! What a night! On a return visit he safely returned 3 A hot head hares ear on a floating line and a spearmint shimmy fished static under a sight indicator proving successful on both occasions.
• WULLIE CARR – Safely returned a stunning 10.2lb rainbow, caught using a buzzer on a floating line.
• MARK LOVE – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a grey gnat on a floating line.
• PAUL ROWE – Weighed in 3 rainbows for 11.27lb and safely returned 1 at 9lb. Buzzers, hares ears and cormorants on a floating line proving successful for him.
• STEVEN LEE – Safely returned 7 rainbows, caught using a black bunny leech on an intermediate line.
• GORDON McVICAR – Was ecstatic to finally return to his favourite fishery! He safely returned 1 rainbow at around 7lb, caught using a black leech on an intermediate line.
• COLIN BIGGAR – Safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a white rabbit on an intermediate line.
• JONNO McDONALD – Safely returned 7 rainbows, caught using a double humpy, buzzers, an orange nomad, and cormorants all on a floating line.
• MAY ANDERSON – Safely returned over 20 rainbows and 3 wild browns, caught using buzzers, Kate McLaren, a blue daiwl bach and an olive apps all on a floating line.

• ALL anglers MUST use the hand sanitising station before approaching the window. The station will be cleaned after every use. Disposable gloves are also available for anyone who wishes that extra bit of protection.
• We ask that our anglers bring the exact money to avoid change being given. All ticket prices can be found on our website or upon request on telephone enquiries.
• Toilets will be cleaned on a regular basis, though we ask that anglers use the antibacterial wipes and toilet brushes available to clean up after their own use.
• Please adhere to all social distancing guidelines in place.

Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report: 05.03.21 – 12.03.21        

“Where the wind blows the fish will follow!” That was one of the first things I was taught when I was a young kid starting out. “Never be afraid of the wind, use it, you don’t need to cast out far! Let your flies drift right into the side or bring your flies right to your feet and hang them before you cast again.”

Those words could not have been truer this week! Those brave anglers who faced the bitterly cold wind were the ones rewarded with the best returns and most impressive fish! A lot of the fish taking right at the side or on the hang!

FISH OF THE WEEK – BRIAN SKINNER was delighted to catch his new P.B! A fin perfect 11.43lb rainbow. Well done, BRIAN!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – The APPS are fast becoming the go to fly for our anglers, it has been the difference between anglers catching few and anglers catching many! Especially effective on an intermediate line. BUZZERS and EGGS also proving very successful this week.

Other successful flies were – Vibrating daddy, black & green zonker, tailed okay dokey, orange nomad, Sir Alex Ferguson, black lures, damsels, millennium bugs, hare ear and a white nomad.

CATCHES OF THE WEEK

• JOHN BRYCE – Weighed in 2 rainbows for 9.12lb and safely returned a double figure rainbow. He was fishing a vibrating daddy and buzzers both on a floating line.
• IAN DON – Safely returned 1 6lb tiger and 1 rainbow. He was fishing an olive apps and a black & green zonker both on an intermediate line. On a return visit he safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using an olive apps again on an intermediate line.
• ALLAN DOWNIE – Safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using an okay dokey and an orange nomad both on a floating line.
• BILLY HOEHLE – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using an Alex Ferguson on an intermediate line.
• BRIAN SKINNER – Safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a pink egg fished static under a sight indicator. On a return visit he safely returned 2 rainbows including the fish of the week, weighing 11.43lb, both were also caught on the pink egg.
• JIMMY MARSHALL – Was delighted to take home a fin perfect 6.69lb rainbow, caught fishing a black lure on an intermediate line.
• KYLE BURNS – Weighed in 1 rainbow for 3.95lb, caught using a cheese egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• DEREK GRAHAM – Safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using a red apps and an olive apps both on an intermediate line.
• TONY STEEN – Was having a very frustrating day! For the second week running, the fish were “at the tease” with him! He lost 5 and the fish were just nipping at his apps. It was looking like the blank was on, but, with just one cast the blank was off in spectacular style! 1 MAN, 1 CAST, 2 FLIES, 3 FISH?? Fishing a red apps and an olive apps on an intermediate line, he hooked into FISH NO1. FISH NO2 took the other apps producing a double hook up! So how did he get fish no3 with no more flies available? After fish no2 was off, FISH NO3 dashed in and grabbed his dropper as he was unhooking fish no1! Well done Tony, you will never forget that crazy 5 minutes! You are truly one very jammy man 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
• ALAN SMITH – Safely returned 11 rainbows, caught fishing a hares ear, red apps and an olive apps on an intermediate line with a fast retrieve.
• DECLAN WINTERS – Safely returned 2 tigers and 2 rainbows, caught using a damsel on an intermediate line and a white egg fished static under a sight indicator.  Declan also became the latest heartbroken victim of the elusive Burnhouse double figure tigers! I wonder if anyone will ever manage to  bring one of these incredibly hard fighting doubles to the net!
• MICK WINTERS – Was ecstatic with the fight he  got from a beautifully conditioned 9lb rainbow, caught using an olive buzzer on a floating line. He also lost a larger fish on the same buzzer.
• ROSS MORRISON – Safely returned 2 rainbows, including 1 “beauty” weighing 9lb. He caught these using eggs fished static under a sight indicator.
• REYNER KENNEDY – Came very close to losing his rod after he sat it down, after his very first cast, thankfully it was one of our smaller fish! He safely returned 4 rainbows, caught using a red apps and an okay dokey on an intermediate line and a white egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• PETER BENNIE – weighed in 1 rainbow for 3.15lb, caught using buzzers on a floating line.
• GREG MARSHALSEY – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a damsel on an intermediate line. He also lost a fish suspected to be a big tiger! Next time Greg, you are after all “the tiger king!”.
• GREG HOGAN – Had another brilliant day at Burnhouse, “what a setting!” He safely returned 15 rainbows and 1 wild brown, caught using a millennium bug and a mixture of eggs salmon pink, olive and cheese all fished static under a sight indicator.
• KEITH RICHARDSON – Safely returned 5 rainbows, caught using a hot head hares ear and buzzers on a floating line.
• GLEN MITCHELL – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a hot head hares ear on a floating line.
• RICHARD TAYLOR – Who had not fished Burnhouse for several years was delighted with his return! Using the very first fly he caught a fish with at Burnhouse many years ago, he safely returned 2 rainbows and a big tiger estimated to be around 8-9lb. He caught these using a white nomad on an intermediate line.
• AARON KIRKWOOD – Safely returned 9 rainbows, using an olive apps and a rhubarb & custard cat both on intermediate lines. He also lost a large double figure rainbow on the cat.
• WULLY CARR – Safely returned 3 rainbows including 1 weighing 10.5lb, all were caught using damsels on a floating line.

Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report: 26.02.21 – 05.03.21                        

We could not have asked for a better atmosphere at the weekend! The sun was shining, the birds were singing, the buzzers were hatching, most of the anglers were catching fish and just enjoying being out in the fresh air!

Anglers fishing intermediate lines had more success than those on floating lines.

FISH OF THE WEEK – This week’s top spot goes to SANDY KIRKWOOD with a beautiful 10.5lb fin perfect bow! Well done, Sandy!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – By far the most successful fly since reopening has been the OLIVE APPS! Especially effective fished on an intermediate line with a fast retrieve. HARES EARS and BUZZERS were also very successful this week.

Other successful flies were – hot head silver humongous, cat bug, white lure, nymphs, squirmy worms, rhubarb & custard cat, eggs, appetiser, daiwl bachs, infected egg, black & gold lure, cats whisker, wotsits, red & white mini lure, Kate McLaren, mini yellow dancer, cormorants, black & green nomad, polar bear, the covid fly, okay dokey, shipmans, sunburst dancer, shimmy eggs, green fritz, Ally McCoist and a pink & white lure.

CATCHES OF THE WEEK

• GREG HOGAN – Weighed in 2 rainbows for 7.10lb and safely returned 16, including rainbows of 7lb, 2x 8lb and 9lb! He also safely returned 2 tigers! Mixed techniques including an olive apps on fast glass with a roll poly retrieve, free lining buzzers and a lime green egg fished static under a sight indicator all proving very successful! On a return visit he safely returned 9 rainbows, mainly caught on the olive apps.
• DEREK GRAHAM – safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using hares ears on a floating line. On a return visit he safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using a hares ear and an olive apps on an intermediate line.
• TONY STEEN – safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a spearmint shimmy egg fished static under a sight indicator. On a return visit he safely returned 7 rainbows caught using an olive apps and a hot head silver humongous both on a floating line.
• BRIAN SKINNER – Safely returned 2 rainbows including 1 weighing approximately 8lb, both were caught using a pink egg fished static under a sight indicator. He also lost a big tiger.
• IAN DON – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a tailed okay dokey on a floating line.
• ALLAN DOWNIE – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using an olive apps on an intermediate line.
• GAVIN JOHNSTON – Safely returned 10 rainbows including 1 weighing 10lb, which had him down to the end of his backing twice! An olive apps on an intermediate line proving very successful for him.
• ANDY MCALPINE – weighed in 1 rainbow for 3.73lb, caught using a green fritz on an intermediate line.
• DAVID HUNTER – Enjoyed his first visit to Burnhouse! He safely returned 2 rainbows, both over 8lb.
• CHARLES FINNLITER – Safely returned a 5lb tiger, caught using an Ally McCoist on a floating line.
• JOHN PHILLIBAN – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a pink & white lure on a floating line.
• LES MARROW – Fished in the evening for a couple of hours and was delighted to take home a fully finned 4.59lb rainbow, caught using buzzers on a floating line.
• DAVID AVORY – Safely returned 1 rainbow at approximately 8lb, caught using Kate McLaren on a floating line. On a return visit he safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a cat bug on a floating line. He is very impressed by the quality of the fish here at Burnhouse.
• JOE MURPHY – Safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using a daiwl bach and a mini yellow dancer on a floating line.

• DECLAN WINTERS – Safely returned 11 rainbows, including an estimated double figure bow. He used mixed tactics including a polar bear and olive apps on an intermediate line, covid fly and an okay dokey on a floating line.
• MICK WINTERS – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a shipmans buzzer on a floating line.
• COLIN KIDD – Safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using a mini cat and an olive apps on an intermediate line.
• LEWIS KIDD – Safely returned 2 rainbows, using a sunburst dancer on an intermediate line and a pink egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• ALAN SMITH – Had a very memorable day with 10 rainbows and a 9.5lb tiger! Hares ears, apps bloodworms and a polar bear all proving very successful for him.
• GARY HOWARTH – Had a brilliant day, he safely returned 8 rainbows all of “a good size”, caught using an olive apps on an intermediate line and buzzers on a floating line. He returned the next day and safely returned another 8 rainbows all over 5lb! The olive apps again, catching most of the fish and he had a couple on a blue daiwl bach on a floating line.
• DAVIE MORRISON – Safely returned 6 rainbows, caught using an olive apps on an intermediate line and buzzers on a floating line.
• WILLIAM LAMBIE – Safely returned 9 rainbows, using an olive apps on an intermediate line and buzzers on a floating line.
• SEAN MOONEY – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a green infected egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• KENNY LOWE – Weighed in 2 rainbows for 11.59lb, caught using a black and gold lure on an intermediate line.

Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report: 19.02.21 – 21.02.21                                        

BURNHOUSE IS BACK!

I honestly do not think kids get as excited on the run up to Santa coming, as our anglers were about Burnhouse opening back up!

For the majority of the weekend the weather was horrendous, it was blowing a hooley and pouring with rain, but nothing would stop our anglers making their return! Even though the waves at times resembled that of the North Sea they all stuck it out, undeterred!

The atmosphere was phenomenal, it was great not only to see anglers on our water again but to hear the laughter & jokes from competitive personalities, to hear the cheers of joy as great fish were landed and naughty words as those big ones got away! It is the medicine we all need in such unpredictable, grim times!

FISH OF THE WEEK – The first fish of the week 2021 was caught by MARTIN LEYDEN. A stunning, perfectly conditioned, 10lb rainbow that put a massive smile on his face! Well done, Martin!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – This week’s top 3 flies were TAILED OKAY DOKEY, BUZZERS & EGGS.

• COLIN SPENCE – Was delighted with his first visit to Burnhouse “great wee fishery!”. He safely returned 6 rainbows caught using crunchers, snatchers and daiwl bachs on a floating line. On a return visit he safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a pink egg fished static, under a sight indicator and a pin fry imitation on an intermediate line.
• STUART BELL – Who hadn’t visited Burnhouse for a while, left saying “what a place! I will definitely be back!” He safely returned 16 rainbows, caught using a black bunny leech on an intermediate line, and a spearmint egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• ALFIE SPENCE – Safely returned 2 rainbows, 1 weighing approximately 8lb “what a fish!”. Alfie used mixed tactics including a blue mop fly fished static under a sight indicator and a covid fly on a floating line.
• TONY STEEN – Got off to a disastrous start, a faulty hook seen him lose 8 fish! Tempted to Chuck his rod in the water, instead he kept going, determined to turn things around! He weighed in 2 rainbows for 7.9lb and safely returned 2 others.
• DEREK GRAHAM – (Titch) Who used to work at Burnhouse many years ago, could not wait to get back to his favourite fishery and what a day he had! “I’m touching fish with practically every cast!” He weighed in 2 rainbows for 9.7lb and safely returned 3 others. All were caught using a gold head hares ear on a floating line.
• JIMMY MARSHALL – Was like a wee kid on Christmas day when he arrived at the fishery. “It’s been far too long since I’ve been here!” He weighed in a beautiful rainbow for 7.11lb, caught using a green egg fished static under a sight indicator. On a return visit he weighed in 2 rainbows for 8.14lb and safely returned 1 other, a goldie lure and an Ally McCoist on an intermediate line, proving successful in flat calm and sunny conditions.
• MARTIN LEYDEN – Thoroughly enjoyed his first visit to Burnhouse! He safely returned 2 rainbows including, the fish of the week weighing 10lb. He was using a green apps and a pink squirmy worm fished static under a sight indicator.
• GAVIN JOHNSTON – Safely returned 4 rainbows, caught using a pink egg and an okay dokey, fished static under a sight indicator. He enjoyed his visit that much; he booked his space straight away for the following week!
• GREGG HOGGAN – “Cracking fishery and some of the best conditioned fish I’ve seen!” He safely returned 11 rainbows and missed just as many! Mixed tactics including free lining buzzers and apps bloodworms, fished on an intermediate line with a rolly polly retrieve proved very successful for him.
• JOHN BRYCE – Weighed in 3 rainbows for an impressive 16.8lb, caught using a black nomad, nymph, and buzzers on a floating line.
• ANDY McALPINE – Weighed in 2 fin perfect rainbows for 9.12lb, both were caught using a black fritz on a floating line.
• BRIAN SKINNER – Relatively new to fly fishing had “a great day!” He weighed in 2 rainbows for 8.8lb and safely returned 3 others, all were caught using an okay dokey fished static under a sight indicator.
• IAN DON – “It’s good to be back!” He safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using a millennium bug fished static under a sight indicator.
• ALLAN DOWNIE – Safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using an okay dokey and a black nymph on a floating line with a slow retrieve.
• AARON KIRKWOOD – Was so excited to be back at Burnhouse that he was waiting at the gates for May to arrive, an hour before opening! He safely returned 7 rainbows, including 1 weighing approximately 9lb. Mixed tactics including a fluff cat and polar bears on an intermediate line, and hares ears on a floating line proved successful in varied weather conditions.
• ROSS MORRISON – Was counting down the sleeps till his first visit back! A first-time visitor said “well that’s a good sign…. there’s a wee guy dancing about the car park telling everyone how excited he is to be back!” I knew right away it was Ross! He safely returned 6 rainbows, 2 weighing approximately 9lb and 1 blue. Eggs and an okay dokey fished static under a sight indicator, and an Ally McCoist on an intermediate line. He was also snapped by a double on one of his first casts.
• REYNER KENNEDY – Enjoyed his first visit to the fishery, he safely returned 4 rainbows, caught using an okay dokey fished static under a sight indicator.
• GREGOR KENNEDY – Gregor nailed it! He safely returned 6 rainbows, caught using an okay dokey fished static under a sight indicator and missed many more!
• DECLAN WINTERS – Made the most of the ticket he won in the big fish competitions back in December. He safely returned 7 rainbows, all of a good size and fin perfect. Buzzers, a blue flash damsel and a yellow shammy on a floating line were the successful flies for him.

• We will be operating a strict booking in only policy. This allows us to limit the number of anglers arriving, using our facilities, and fishing our water; it also enables a better track and trace. Please phone 07949 220 511 to book your space.
• If you feel unwell or show any symptoms of COVID-19 please cancel your booking, stay at home and isolate.
• We will be issuing tickets from the window on the lodge.
• Refreshments are still available via the window, gloves and masks will be worn by staff and strict hygiene standards implemented during the handling.
• ALL anglers MUST use the hand sanitising station before approaching the window. The station will be cleaned by staff after every use. Disposable gloves are also available for anyone who wishes that extra bit of protection.
• We ask that our anglers bring the exact money to avoid change being required. All ticket prices can be found on our website or upon request on telephone enquiries.
• Toilets will be thoroughly cleaned on an hourly basis, though we also ask that anglers use the antibacterial wipes and toilet brushes provided to clean up after their own use.
• Please adhere to the social distancing guidelines.
• We would hate for anything to be traced back to our beloved sport, so let us work together to keep it as safe as possible for all participants.

Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report: 18.12.20 – 27.12.20                                        

We hope you all had a brilliant Christmas and new year! Hopefully 2021 is a better year for us all! Even though we enter into this year with heavy restrictions, there is at least some hope on the horizon!

Unfortunately, our festive fortnight report was cut short this year due to the big freeze. We have been completely iced over since Monday the 28th of December. With the freezing temperatures due to remain we are unsure when we will be able to reopen, however we will keep you updated.

This is not a bad thing though, the sport on a Wednesday tends to be better because of the two days’ rest it gets when we are closed on a Monday and Tuesday, can you imagine how great it will be after a few weeks rest?

FISH OF THE FESTIVES – DECLAN WINTERS is incredibly lucky to be receiving the final 6hr c&r ticket for 2020! Though several bigger doubles were hooked into none made it to the net, making his 10.5lb rainbow the final winner of the year! Well done, Declan!

Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report: 11.12.20 – 18.12.20                                        

It has been a week of constant variation in the water temperature and air pressure which resulted in a variation in performance and tactics.

There were days when the fishing was spectacular, the fish were on the chase, big bow waves and aggressive takes creating excitement amongst the anglers. On other days  the fish appeared to just switch off, small natural flies on a slow retrieve or fishing under a sight indicator were the key to success.

FISH OF THE WEEK – This week’s top spot and winner of the 6hr C&R ticket is JOHN DONALDSON with a stunning 13.5lb rainbow! The fish put up a tremendous fight, stripping 30 yards of backing on its first run!  Well done, John!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – This week’s top 3 flies were ORANGE LURES, BUZZERS and TAILED OKAY DOKEY.

Other successful flies were eggs, black rabbits, gold head nymph, damsels, millennium bugs, ace of spades, cormorants, daiwl bachs, wotsits, tequila blob, pink lure, black & green zonker, pink squirmy worm and a peach shimmy.

• TAM BROGAN – “Had a brilliant day!” He weighed in 1 rainbow and 1 blue for 6.61lb and safely returned 6 rainbows, 1 weighing 8lb. The big bow waves from the fish chasing his orange lure in the shallow water, were causing quite a stir amongst anglers.
• IAN DOBBIE – Safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using an orange egg fished static under a sight indicator and a black rabbit on a floating line. On a return visit he safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a millennium bug fished static under a sight indicator and a black rabbit on a floating line.
• GREG HOWE – Had one of those frustrating days that he lost every fish he hooked into. He returned the next day on a mission to have a better day and he certainly did! He safely returned 2 rainbows, the hard fighting fish made quite an impression on him (and his wrist 😂) Both fish were caught in the shallows fishing a gold head nymph on a floating line.
• DECLAN WINTERS – Safely returned 6 rainbows including 1 weighing 10.78lb. All were caught in the shallows using an orange fritz, uv damsel and a millennium bug all on a floating line. On a return visit he safely returned 4 rainbows, caught using a tailed okay dokey fished static under a sight indicator.
• GEOFF APPLETON – safely returned 5 rainbows, caught using an ace of spades on a floating line.
• IAN DON – Safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using an orange lure in the shallows.
• ALLAN DOWNIE – “What a cracking couple of weeks I’ve had great fun!” Allan safely returned 5 rainbows and lost as many using an orange nomad and a damsel on a floating line, with a quick retrieve. Another angler to get the “buzz” from the chase in the shallows.
• JOHN DONALDSON – Made difficult conditions looks easy! He safely returned 2 tigers – 1 weighing 6lb and 11 rainbows including the fish of the week weighing 13.5lb. Cormorants, daiwl bachs and a tailed okay dokey were the successful flies.
•  SCOT MITCHELL – Had been looking forward to his first visit to Burnhouse and even though the conditions were very difficult he was not disappointed and managed 5 rainbows to the net including 1 weighing 8.5lb.

• RONNIE TURNBULL – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a green daiwl bach on a floating line.

Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report: 04.12.20 – 11.12.20                                                      

Anglers have been awestruck by the beautiful wintery sunrises that welcome them in the morning. A soul pleasing sight that sets them up perfectly for the day ahead.

With the settled temperatures, the fishing has been exceptional with very few blanks recorded. With the brownies spawning in the burn, the trout are gathering in large numbers in the shallows, meaning that again the best sport came from this area.

The atmosphere amongst anglers has been amusing, full of fun, jokes and banter, with personalities bouncing off each other, even amongst anglers who do not know each other.

At one-point big belly aching laughter had May out enquiring what was going on. One angler had hooked up to a decent sized tiger, that tiger put up a colossal fight, stripping all of his line it went straight across the water in front of another angler, who’s line got in the way and he ended up foul hooking it. It was a hilarious sight watching anglers on either side of the water hooked into the one fish! Sparking the joke from May “hey how many guys does it take to bring in one tiger!” More laughter erupted! Once the fish was in the net, the angler who had originally hooked the fish chucked the other anglers fly in the water. On the retrieve from the other side of the water he hooked into a fish, which was his first ever fly fish, adding even more hilarity to the scene.

This week has been a reminder of how important fishing is to us all. It is that brilliant and much needed escape from reality, a reality which at the moment is full of so much uncertainty and restrictions.

FLIES OF THE WEEK – This week’s top flies were BUZZERS, TAILED OKAY DOKEY, EGGS and MILLENNIUM BUGS.

Other successful flies were blue flash damsels, pink dancer, orange dancer, green & white lure, pink & yellow rabbit, red & white fluff cat, orange fritz, mini cut throat cat, Ally McCoist, damsel nymph, cat bug, pin fry imitation, white zonker, daiwl bachs, big red and an orange & yellow muddler.

• DECLAN WINTERS – has had yet another successful week at his “favourite fishery”. On his first visit he safely returned 6 rainbows, including one at 8lb. Buzzers, eggs and a millennium bug being the successful flies. On a return visit he safely returned 1 blue, 1 tiger and 13 rainbows, including the fish of the week at 12.43lb! An orange and a green okay dokey both tailed, proving to be irresistible to the fish.
• FINDLAY BELL – safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a millennium bug fished static under a sight indicator.
• STUART BELL – Safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a millennium bug fished static under a sight indicator.
• ALLAN SMITH – safely returned 1 tiger and 4 rainbows, caught using a white zonker and a pin fry imitation on a floating line.
• THOMAS FLEMMING – “I’ve had a great day and will definitely be back!” He safely returned 6 rainbows, caught using a millennium bug fished static under a sight indicator.
• JOE MURPHY – safely returned 2 impressive rainbows, weighing 7lb and 8.38lb! Both were caught using a cat bug on a floating line.
• SANDY KIRKWOOD – “That was brilliant! Amazing day, I really enjoyed that!” Sandy weighed in 2 rainbows for 8.48lb and safely returned 6. He was fishing his favourite fly, a damsel nymph on a floating line.
• BARRY PRENTISE – had a big smile on his face at the end of the day. He weighed in 2 rainbows for 11.82lb, caught using a millennium bug fished static, under a sight indicator. Barry has only been fly fishing a couple of times and is doing brilliantly!
• JUSTIN PRENTISE – Made his return after catching his first ever fish on the fly last week, he weighed in 1 rainbow for 3.5lb, caught using an Ally McCoist on a floating line.
• IAN PRENTISE – weighed in 1 rainbow for 5.52lb, caught using an orange fritz on a floating line.
• AARON KIRKWOOD – Tied up some stunning red & white fluff cats and pink & yellow rabbits, the night before his visit and could not wait to try them out. The fish were “going crazy” for them, it was pull after pull! He ended his day with 8 to the net including a beautiful 6lb tiger. A larger fish claiming his fluff cat.
• JOSH MOODY – who had not fished Burnhouse for several years had a great return visit. “I will see you next week, this place and the fish are amazing!” He safely returned 1 6lb blue and 8 rainbows including ones weighing 10.5lb, 8.5lb and 6.8lb! Mixed tactics and flies including an orange egg fished static under a sight indicator and a green & white lure on an intermediate line proved successful for him.
• IAN EARLE – Enjoyed his first visit to Burnhouse, he safely returned 4 rainbows, caught using an orange egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• RICHARD GRAY – gave the funniest feedback I’ve heard to date, “your fish should come with a risk of injury warning! They fight like mad! My arms killing me!” He safely returned 10 rainbows, caught using a green tailed okay dokey and a pink dancer, both on a floating line. He was that happy with his day that he came back the next again day safely returning 5 rainbows, caught using daiwl bachs and an Ally McCoist both on a floating line.
• BRIAN SKINNER – New to fly fishing he weighed in 1 rainbow for 3.97lb, caught using an orange egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• ROBERT PATON – Had a brilliant first visit to the Lochan, he weighed in 2 rainbows for 8.58lb and safely returned 1 rainbow, weighing approximately 6lb. Buzzers on a floating line and a pink egg fished static under a sight indicator.
• GEOFF APPLETON – safely returned 4 rainbows including 1 weighing 8lb, caught using an orange & yellow muddler and a big red both on a floating line.
• ANDY McALPINE – weighed in 2 rainbows for 12.85lb, caught using a blue flash damsel and buzzers on a floating line. “You don’t get fish like that in many places!”
• ALLAN DOWNIE – Despite a disastrous start when his rod snapped Allan left saying “What a day! I’ve had brilliant fun!” He safely returned 6 rainbows and the one that had him as excited as a kid on Christmas Day, his very first tiger! All of his fish were caught using buzzers on a floating line.
• JONNO MCDONALD – safely returned 10 rainbows, caught using an orange dancer and buzzers both on a floating line.
• MAY ANDERSON – safely returned 9 rainbows and a 9.5lb tiger that made her shoulder tender for days! An orange tailed okay dokey, a mini cut throat cat and an Ally McCoist all on a floating line were the successful flies.

• We will be operating a strict booking in only policy. This allows us to limit the number of anglers arriving, using our facilities, and fishing our water; it also enables a better track and trace. Please phone 07949 220 511 to book your space.
• If you feel unwell or show any symptoms of COVID-19 please cancel your booking, stay at home and isolate.
• We will be issuing tickets from the window on the lodge.
• Refreshments are still available via the window, gloves and masks will be worn by staff and strict hygiene standards implemented during the handling.
• ALL anglers MUST use the hand sanitising station before approaching the window. The station will be cleaned by staff after every use. Disposable gloves are also available for anyone who wishes that extra bit of protection.
• We ask that our anglers bring the exact money to avoid change being required. All ticket prices can be found on our website or upon request on telephone enquiries.
• Toilets will be thoroughly cleaned on an hourly basis, though we also ask that anglers use the antibacterial wipes and toilet brushes provided to clean up after their own use.
• Please adhere to the social distancing guidelines.
• We would hate for anything to be traced back to our beloved sport, so let us work together to keep it as safe as possible for all participants.

Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report: 27.1120 – 04.12.20                                                       

Winter has arrived and it is beautiful! Those mild mornings have been replaced by a landscape – picturesque enough for a Christmas card!

There have been a few challenging days with flat calms, the constant variation in the temperature and air pressure, however, with buzzers hatching all week those eagle-eyed anglers spotting the signs have had some great returns!

The best sport coming from the shallower water at the bridge.

FISH OF THE WEEK – Well, nobody managed to knock “oor Mays” 10lb 3oz rainbow off top spot! Even though bigger doubles were hooked into, none made the net.

• ROSS MORRISON – Safely returned a fin perfect 6lb rainbow, caught using an apps bloodworm fished static under a sight indicator. His friend GREG had the biggest catch of the day though…. he caught Ross, right on the back of the head!!

• MARGARET HORNAL – Within half an hour of arriving at the fishery Margaret and her husband Jim achieved their bag limits. Margaret weighed in 1 rainbow for 3lb, caught using a tequila blob on a floating line.
• JIM HORNAL – Weighed in 1 rainbow for 7lb 12oz, caught using a pink shimmy fished static under a sight indicator.
• JUSTIN PRENTISE – Decided after years of bait fishing that it was time to try fly fishing. After just a half hour tuition he weighed in 1 rainbow for 6lb, caught using an Ally McCoist on a floating line. “That was amazing! It is such a different fight! I am never going back to bait! See you next week!” Safe to say he was absolutely delighted!
• TONY STEEN – Safely returned 1 6lb rainbow, caught using a brown squirmy fished static under a sight indicator.
• COLIN GRAY – Weighed in 2 rainbows for 6.5lb and safely returned another 3 rainbows, all caught using buzzers on a floating line.
• JACK ZAREBSKI – Safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a pink apps bloodworm fished static under a sight indicator.
• IAN DON – Safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a hot head black cruncher and a pink & white lure both on a floating line.
• MAY ANDERSON – Safely returned 9 rainbows, caught using a tailed okay dokey, pink shimmy  egg and an apps bloodworm. May had to call on the help of an angler to net her 10lb 3oz rainbow, with “a tail like a shovel” it put up an epic fight, which proved a little painful for her recently fractured elbow 🙈
• JONNO MCDONALD – Safely returned 10 rainbows, caught using an orange dancer with a fast retrieve and buzzers with a slow figure of 8 retrieve both on a floating line.

Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report: 20.11.20 – 27.11.20                                                      

Week one of the new restrictions have seen us a lot quieter than normal. We have been using this time to do some essential repairs to the bridge, paths, and podiums so that when our regulars can return, they return in both safer times and to a safer fishery!

Our kingfisher has been making the most of the peace and quiet too, spending most of his day at the fishery leaving anglers in awe of his stealth and beauty.

The weather has been a lot more settled in contrast to the last few blustery weeks, though still mild for this time of the year! We are still seeing temperatures mild enough for sedges! We could not believe there were so many last week, this week there are still as many!

The doubles have all evaded capture this week, there have been many broken lines, hearts and even rods! If you hook into one of our doubles, do not bully it, there will be only one winner and unfortunately it will not be you!

FISH OF THE WEEK – This week’s top spot goes to ROSS MORRISON who safely returned a stunning 9lb 2oz fin perfect rainbow. Well done, Ross!

• BRAIN McCLUCKIE – has found “his second home!” After another successful visit to Burnhouse, he safely returned 4 rainbows, caught using an apps bloodworm fished static under a sight indicator.
• STUART PEACH – safely returned 4 rainbows, caught using various wotsits fished static under a sight indicator. Stuart also lost a double!
• ARTHUR PEACH – had “the best days fishing he’s had for years!” He weighed in 2 rainbows for 9lb 7oz, caught using a green wotsit fished static under a sight indicator. He also lost a double figure rainbow when his knot failed, a knot tied by his son, there was cries of sabotage and much hilarity!
• JIMMY McKENZIE – weighed in 2 rainbows for 6lb 9oz, caught using a green fritz on a floating line.
• GREG MARSHALSEY – enjoyed his first visit to Burnhouse! Using an orange lure on a floating line, he caught his first ever tiger and at 6lb 2oz it was a beauty! He was blown away by the fight that saw him unable to get the tiger up off the bottom for over 5 minutes.
• ROSS MORRISON – cannot wait to get back to Burnhouse after his first visit! He safely returned 4 rainbows including one weighing 9lb 2oz.  He was using a green eggstacy worm fished static under a sight indicator.
• HENRY SOBELEWSKI – safely returned 4 rainbows, caught using a fab on a floating line. “What do you feed the fish in here? Steroids? They don’t want to come in!” Safe to say he was very impressed by the quality of our grade A fish!
• AARON KIRKWOOD – safely returned an 8lb rainbow, caught using a cutthroat cat on an intermediate line. “Beautiful big tail! Great condition!”
• DECLAN WINTERS – who had not fished Burnhouse for several years had 2 “brilliant” visits this week. His first seen him safely return 14 fish! Including 9lb, 7lb & 6lb rainbows and 1 blue. “This place is brilliant! The fish fight like salmon!” His second visit seen him safely return 6 fish including 8lb and 7lb rainbows. Apps bloodworms, various eggs and wotsits all fished static under a sight indicator proved to be very successful for him.
• BARRY PRENTISE – who is new to fly fishing safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a yellow blob on a floating line.
• IAN PRENTISE – weighed in 3 rainbows for 10lb 4oz, caught using a green wobbler on a floating line.
• ALAN SMITH – safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using his small pin fry imitation that never fails him.
• GORDON MCVICAR – still has a sore wrist from the fight he got from his tiger last week! He safely returned 2 rainbows this week, caught using a black dancer on a floating line.
• IAN DON – safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a pink squirmy fished static under a sight indicator. After an epic fight, Ian lost a double figure rainbow right at the net, we estimated this fish to be around 14lb-15lb! He was gutted but like a true champ he said, “well that’s just fishing!”
• IAN DOBBIE – safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using an orange squirmy fished static under a sight indicator.
• GARY SNEDDON – safely returned an 8lb rainbow, caught using an orange fritz on a floating line. “What a fish lass! Great fight!”
• JONNO McDONALD – safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using an orange dancer on a floating line. Jonno was another who lost a double figure rainbow. He also caught the first eel to be caught at Burnhouse for several years, this fell for his green egg fished static under a sight indicator. He took great pleasure in shouting May over to see it, knowing May has a “slight” fear of them.
• MAY ANDERSON – safely returned 4 rainbows, caught using an okay dokey and a pink shimmy fished static under a sight indicator.
• SANDY KIRKWOOD – I never usually mention blanks but Sandy had what other anglers would class as a horrible day! He lost every fish he hooked into including 2 big fish, one a double! Sandy is the kind of guy that lifts everyone’s spirits, a real joy to be around! At the end of his day he said, “I’ve had such a great day, I really enjoyed that!” What a guy! That is the spirit of a true angler, enjoying your day no matter what!

Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report: 13.11.20 – 20.11.20                                                                  

It has been a strange November for us anglers! With milder weather than in previous years, we are seeing a lot of late hatches and insect life that we should not be seeing at this time of the year. Who would believe that we are in November when there is still a plentiful amount of amber sedges?

The constant variation in temperature has proven to be challenging, however there have been very few blanks reported this week! Our angler’s perseverance being the key to their success but isn’t that what makes fishing more exciting?

Finding out what the fish want, figuring out the depth and the retrieve. Fishing is not meant to be easy; it is meant to be rewarding of the work put in. The reward for our anglers? Grade A fish that never fail to impress with their strength and their condition.

• BRIAN EADIE – safely returned 5 rainbows, caught using a shimmy and an orange rabbit both on a floating line.
• WULLIE CARR – safely returned 2 rainbows 1 around 8lb, caught using buzzers and a hot head damsel both on a floating line.
• ALAN SMITH – safely returned 4 rainbows all of a decent size, caught using cormorants and a small pin fry imitation of his own design, which is deadly for Alan and many of the anglers have “clocked” the success he is having with it! I think you may have a few anglers having a closer look at that fly Alan. 😂

• BRIAN STEWART – weighed in 1 rainbow, for 3lb 2oz caught using a UV cats’ whisker on a floating line.
• ALAN HOGG (Alan Fly Guy) from THE FLY-FISHING GUY UK STILL WATER & RIVERS Facebook page – safely returned 4 of the hardest fighting and best quality fish has landed! He caught these using a black and green daiwl bach and a hot head lure.
• JIMMY QUIN – enjoyed his day at Burnhouse safely returning a fin perfect rainbow, caught using a black and red lure.
• GEOFF APPLETON – safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a black & peacock spider on a floating line.
• JAMIE REYNOLDS – safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using eggs fished static under a sight indicator.
• SAM CAMERON – safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a white shimmy bug fished static under a sight indicator.
• ALLY MCMAHON – safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a white & chartreuse rabbit on an intermediate line.
• DEREK GRAHAM – weighed in 2 rainbows for 6lb 8oz and safely returned another 2 rainbows. All were caught using orange eggs fished static under a sight indicator.
• TONY STEEN – weighed in 3 rainbows for an impressive 18lb 3oz, caught using an orange egg and an orange shimmy fished static under a sight indicator. He also caught 1 using a sparkler on a floating line with a quick retrieve.
• JACKIE BURNET – safely returned safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a yellow dancer on a floating line.
• JOHN BOYLE JNR – safely returned 1 rainbow, caught using a yellow dancer on a floating line.
• JOHN BOYLE SNR – safely returned 2 rainbows, caught using a yellow & red shimmy fished static under a sight indicator.
• STEPHEN LIMBERT – safely returned a stunning 9lb 8oz rainbow, caught using a soldier Palmer on a floating line. This is his second visit to Burnhouse, both times he has caught “impressive fish” last week he had a Burnhouse double.
• STEVIE McGOWAN from NEWHOUSE FISHERY – safely returned 3 rainbows, caught using shimmy bugs fished static under a sight indicator.
• JONNO MCDONALD – was ecstatic to catch his first ever tiger! He also safely returned 3 rainbows, the successful flies were an orange dancer, buzzers, and an orange shimmy.
• MAY ANDERSON – safely returned 4 rainbows, caught using a mini cutthroat cat and a cinnamon & gold, both on a floating line.

With the tightening of COVID-19 restrictions and the introduction of Tier Level 3 and 4 areas to our surroundings –

• We can only accept anglers from our Tier Level 3 Falkirk area. This means for the time being saying goodbye, for now, to some of our regulars, and we are as disappointed as you are.
• However, this is in the best interest of our anglers and staff. If we do our best to limit the spread now, the quicker we can get back to enjoying the things we love in life. We look forward to welcoming you all back, in safer times!
• Online bookings have been suspended temporarily, please call 07949220511 to book your session. This is to allow us to monitor where our anglers are travelling from. ALL ANGLERS MUST BOOK IN ADVANCE.

IMPORTANT COVID-19 REGULATIONS – PLEASE READ

Please adhere to the following:

• We will be operating a strict booking in only policy. This allows us to limit the number of anglers arriving, using our facilities, and fishing our water; it also enables a better track and trace. Please phone 07949 220 511 to book your space.
• If you feel unwell or show any symptoms of COVID-19 please cancel your booking, stay at home and isolate.
• We will be issuing tickets from the window on the lodge.
• Refreshments are still available via the window, gloves and masks will be worn by staff and strict hygiene standards implemented during the handling.
• ALL anglers MUST use the hand sanitising station before approaching the window. The station will be cleaned by staff after every use. Disposable gloves are also available for anyone who wishes that extra bit of protection.
• We ask that our anglers bring the exact money to avoid change being required. All ticket prices can be found on our website or upon request on telephone enquiries.
• Toilets will be thoroughly cleaned on an hourly basis, though we also ask that anglers use the antibacterial wipes and toilet brushes provided to clean up after their own use.
• Please adhere to the social distancing guidelines.
• We would hate for anything to be traced back to our beloved sport, so let us work together to keep it as safe as possible for all participants.
