Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 25/02/2022 – Friday 04/03/2022

Another week of variable weather, but after the month we have had the anglers came well prepared to experience four seasons in one day! Setting up multiple rods for a quick change in the varied conditions proved to be a sensible and successful move for most anglers when the sudden change in weather would quickly change the depth of the fish. No hour was the same as the next, with anglers enjoying the thrill of a surface take and then having to make the change to sinking lines.

A total of 389 fish were caught over 5 days, with some of those days being quieter than normal, the rod average was a very respectable 5.8,  brilliant sport in challenging conditions! It was another week that seen many of our larger specimens make the anglers nets, giving them another reason to smile and another story to tell!

FISH OF THE WEEK –  This weeks top spot goes to JOCK KETTLES with rainbow weighing 13.4lb!  Well Done, Jock!

SAFE CATCH AND RELEASE PROCEDURE

  • Only use single, barbless hooks. Strictly no multiple hook snakes, double or treble hooks. Not just for catch and release but for kill tickets too.
  • Due to the size and strength of our fish we ask that ALL anglers use a minimum of 8lb line, this is to reduce the number of fish being lost and over played.
  • Bring the fish to the net as quickly as possible. Over playing a fish causes stress and exhaustion and decreases the chance of survival.
  • Unhook the fish as quickly as possible, keep the fish in the water. It is strictly forbidden for anglers bring the fish onto the banking or podiums as this removes the protective slime, increasing the chances of infections and diseases.
  • If you have to handle the fish do so with wet hands, never with gloves on, this avoids removing the protective slime.
  • If the hook is too deep to be removed, cut the line as close to the hook as possible.
  • Avoid squeezing the fish as this can cause damage to internal organs.
  • Take time to recover the fish, be patient as this can take some time especially in warmer weather. Support it gently until the fish is strong enough to swim away from you.

If you are struggling to recover a fish please call the bailiff for assistance, the decision to kill any fish whilst on catch and release must only be made by the bailiff.

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 18/02/2022 – Friday 25/02/2022

That certainly was a very entertaining week! There were days that were beautiful, anglers could relax, enjoy the sunshine listening to the wonderful sound of birds singing and then there were days that we had to close the fishery due to high winds, snow, and flooding! A week where the Scottish weather gave us everything it possibly could! The weather was variable and frustrating, but, the fishing was exceptional! There were very few blanks recorded last week, those big fish showed up in large numbers including the elusive tigers, many PBs were smashed and many anglers experienced their best ever days fishing!

On Sunday we were excited to host the next round of the inter fisheries Quaich competition, however the weather had different ideas! We experienced severe flooding, meaning that due to safety reasons the competition had to be postponed! We had no podiums above water level, you could wade around the paths in water up to your knees in some parts and the water running through the fishery could have made you believe you were fishing a large river! But our team and a couple of anglers from other teams stayed to brave the horrific conditions, a training session in the worst possible weather! The banter was flowing, and our team had a little competition amongst themselves! Our fish are well known to fight incredibly hard, so bringing them in against a raging current was even more of a challenge and an adrenaline rush! The day that started off so badly, ended up being pretty awesome! You can read how the anglers got on after the catch report.

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 11/02/2022 – Friday 18/02/2022

You know its going to be bad when they give the storms names! What a truly horrible week! We have had snow, black ice, glorious sunshine, gale force winds, flooding, half of the water freezing, flat calms, and waves that resemble that of the North Sea! Sometimes all in one day! Understandably we had another quiet week, I was very surprised to see any anglers at all, so I thank all of you that braved that weather to join us, you all deserved a medal!

The fishing, a lot like the weather varied with some anglers producing excellent returns while others struggled. The hotspots this week were the cabin side bay, sluice corner and the field drains.

Thank you also to the anglers who joined us from Newhouse, Bangour and High Cleughearn Fishery to get their practice sessions for the next round of the Quaich. You can read how those anglers got on after the catch report.

The fish were caught and lost on black apps, cormorants, and green shimmies on a slow intermediate line.

David was as disappointed as I was to see such a beautiful fish not return to the water, but its injuries would not have healed.
  • ALEC CAMPBELL – Weighed in 1 rainbow for 3lb and safely returned a beautiful wild brown weighing approximately 1lb using a tailed okay dokey on a floating line. Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 04/02/2022 – Friday 11/02/2022

The high winds, snow and freezing cold temperatures put a lot of anglers off this week but the ones who braved the weather were rewarded, we witnessed an increase in the amount of fish anglers were catching… sometimes the worst weather can produce the best fishing!

The wind has been blowing into the far bank for over a month, regulars knowing this and who were brave enough picked up fish easily casting along the shoreline, a challenge in the strong winds but especially on the days when the snow was blowing directly into their face. Other hot spots included the field drains, burn drop off and the sluice corner.

The larger fish showed up in big numbers this week, with many impressive specimens landed and many anglers reporting losing double figure fish, usually right at the net. We recommend using a minimum of 8lb line, check your line regularly for knots especially in the windy weather, try to get another angler to net larger fish or call on the bailiff and make sure those hooks are nice and strong! Our larger specimens have a reputation for fighting hard and breaking hearts.

FISH OF THE WEEK –  This weeks top spot goes to TONY STEEN with a rainbow weighing 14.9lb, one of 2 doubles caught by Tony in what was an amazing week for him. Well Done, Tony!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – This weeks top 3 flies were BUZZERS, SHIMMIES and CORMORANTS.

Other successful flies were foam beetles, cat bugs, red & black lures, snails, pin fry imitations, snakes, diawl bachs, snatchers, squirmies, incredible cat, hares ears, apps, eggs, nymphs, mini lures, cats whiskers, millennium bugs, shammies, daddies, bunny leech, bibio, eggs with legs.

CATCH REPORT

  • DONALD FORBES – The weather was awful and changed every hour, but Donald made the challenging conditions look easy with 11 to the net using buzzers and beetles on a floating line.
  • TRACY ALLAN – Even the bad weather wont stop this woman from getting her days fishing in, she safely returned 2 rainbows caught using a red & black lure and a cat bug on a floating line.
  • CAITLIN ALLAN – Safely returned 1 rainbow caught using a cat bug on a floating line.
  • HUGH RANKIN – Safely returned 1 rainbow using a cormorant on a floating line, while Cambell “made his weekly donation” next week Cambell!
  • COKER WILSON – Safely returned 3 rainbows including 1 weighing approximately 6lb caught using nails and a pin fry imitation on a floating line.
  • GORDON REID – From Bowden Springs fishery safely returned 4 rainbows using snakes and cormorants on an intermediate line.
  • COLIN SPENCE – “No fish fight like these fish do!” Colin had a brilliant day in terrible conditions, he safely returned 7 rainbows “probably lost about the same amount and then never mind the amount of offers and pulls! He was using cormorants, diawl bachs and snatchers on a floating line.
  • ANDY GIBB – Who is part of the High Cleughearn Fishery team popped up for a practice session ahead of the next round of the winter Quaich fishery competition which is at Burnhouse this time. He safely returned 7 fish using cat bugs, squirmies and incredible cats on floating lines and fished static under a sight indicator.
  • DEREK GRAHAM – I started the day thinking that nobody would turn up because of the wind, snow, and freezing temperatures, but Derek arrived well dressed for the occasion, like a burglar, black balaclava, and all! A truly terrifying sight if caught off guard! Braving the weather was worth it, in his 4 hours he safely returned 10 fish using a hares ear and black apps on a floating line and shimmies fished static under a sight indicator.
  • TONY STEEN – What a week for Tony! On his first visit he safely returned 8 fish including rainbows weighing 14.9lb, 9lb and a few around 5-6lb using shimmies fished static under a sight indicator. On his return visit he safely returned 18 fish including a rainbow weighing 11.2lb also using shimmies fished static under a sight indicator.
  • TAM BROGGAN – Safely returned 1 rainbow caught using a white egg fished static under a sight indicator.

His wee face resembling that of a kid who had lost their favourite toy! Next time Jim!
  • WULLIE MOUNTFORD – I could hear Jim shouting from the cabin and could see Wullie with a large fish in his net, now I cant use Jims exact words lol but I will write them as close as I can get “This is becoming a bit of a habit with that auld…” for the 2nd week running he had caught a large fish, this one weighing 8.4lb. He safely returned 3 rainbows using a black apps fished static under a sight indicator and lost a very large double when it straightened his hook right at the net. It was suspected to be the same fish that had escaped Jim earlier in the day.
  • MICHAEL DONNELY – It was looking a lot like the blank was on, however when reeling I to go home he managed to catch one! Eggs with legs, saving the day! Perhaps try them on the retrieve on your next visit instead of static.
  • DEREK GRAHAM – Safely returned 5 rainbows caught using shimmies fished static under a sight indicator.
  • KEVIN CRAIG – Safely returned 2 rainbows caught using buzzers on a floating line.
  • IAN DON – Safely returned 1 rainbow caught using an okay dokey on a floating line.
  • BRYCE DYSART – Was having a nightmare day when fish after fish came off! He was determined not to leave until he got a fish to the net! He finally got one to the net using buzzers on a floating line and received a massive cheer!

A massive thank you to all of the anglers that braved this weeks crazy weather, we hope to see you all again soon! Tight lines for the week ahead!

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 28/01/2022 – Friday 04/02/2022

We have had it lucky all winter with the mild and beautiful weather, however with back-to-back storms forecast for this month I think our luck has finally run out!

It was a quiet week at Burnhouse; however we were very impressed and surprised to see some hardy anglers take on the gale force winds and horizontal rain! It would appear that nothing will stop some anglers from going fishing! Crazy or dedicated, personally I think it’s a bit of both, but they all earned my respect for their perseverance!

This week our 5-man team took part in the 2nd round of the winter Quaich fishery competition at Newhouse fishery, you can read how we got on after the catch report.

FISH OF THE WEEK –  This weeks top spot goes to JIM ANDERSON with a rainbow weighing 11.2lb. Well Done, Jim!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – This weeks top 3 flies were BUZZERS, APPS and CORMORANTS.

Other successful flies were Pittsford pea, dogs bollocks, bunny leech, shimmies, eggs, squirmies, shammies, mop flies, black pennell, rabbits, yellow dancer, millennium bugs, fabs, foam beetles, cat bugs, black mamba, black lures, hares ears and diawl bachs.

  • ALLAN DOWNIE – Had an enjoyable couple of hours on the water, he safely returned 3 rainbows caught using pink and red apps on a floating line.

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 07/01/2022 – Friday 14/01/2022

We are still experiencing very mild weather for this time of the year, for the majority of the week the fish have continued to sit higher in the water. THE BURNHOUSE FISHERY FESTIVE FORTNIGHT REPORT

Friday 24/12/2021 – Friday 07/01/2022

Happy New Year from all of us at Burnhouse!

This time last year we were completely frozen over, the scenery and conditions in stark contrast to the winter we are currently experiencing! The weather has been exceptionally mild for this time of the year, meaning that the fish are acting differently to what we would normally expect from winter fishing. Anglers are both in disbelief and excited to see fish rising all over the water and to be still catching on dry flies as the fish continue to sit higher in the water.

The fishing has not slowed either, we have seen some brilliant sport over the last fortnight.

FISH OF THE FESTIVE FORTNIGHT –  The 2 winners of the festive fortnight big fish competition are FRANK DALY with his new P.B, a rainbow weighing 15.02lb! And JIM ANDERSON who is on a winning streak, with a rainbow weighing 14.6lb. Well done to both of you! You are the final 2 winners of the winter big fish competition, your free all-day c&r ticket and scrumptious steak pie awaits you!

FLIES OF THE FESTIVE FORTNIGHT – The top 3 flies were BUZZERS, APPS and SHIMMIES.

Other successful flies were yellow owls, hoppers, klink hammers, smokers, daddies, foam beetles, cdcs, bibio snatchers, bibio crunchers, bibio, foam ants, sedgehogs, suspended hares ears, diawl bachs, cormorants, eggs, stalking bugs, snakes, rabbits, yellow dancer, blobs, black mamba, orange lures, damsels, squirmies, mop flies, shimmy eggs, fabs, pink lures, humongous, cats whiskers, predator worm, cat variants, cat bugs, pink & white lures, black & green lures, black poodle, cutthroat cat, shammies, eggstacy worms, blood worms, mini lures and various dries.

CATCH REPORT

  • CHRIS LUCAS – Safely returned 4 rainbows using buzzers on a floating line.
  • FRANK DONNELLY – Stared off the day brilliantly with a rainbow weighing 5.5lb that had the most beautiful colouration, he then went on to safely return a further 2 including another beautifully coloured rainbow that made him wonder if he had caught the same fish twice. He used various apps on a floating line.
  • BOB MCMONIGLE – Had a disastrous start to the day when on his first cast his reel shot off his rod into the water, he managed to recover the spool but not the reel. As if that wasn’t bad enough, it began to rain heavily, and he hadn’t zipped his hood on properly, so he had a very wet neck and back which would prove to be too much when in the afternoon the temperatures dropped! However, despite all of this he still enjoyed his first visit to Burnhouse, the fight from and condition of the fish making up for the disastrous start. He safely returned 4 rainbows using a pink mop fly fished static under a sight indicator and a foam ant on a floating line.

  • CHRIS MELVILLE – Broke in the new rod that he won in the charity raffle! He safely returned 5 rainbows caught using a bibio snatcher and a vicar buzzer on a 3ft midge tip line.

And what a fish it was, a beautiful rainbow weighing 13lb! “What a fight!” He was soaked to the bone and freezing cold after forgetting his waterproofs so called it a day, but he was over the moon!
  • COLIN SPENCE – Safely returned 3 rainbows using fabs and cormorants on a floating line.

BURNHOUSE LOCHAN WEEKLY REPORT

Friday 17/12/2021 – Friday 24/12/2021

This week was exactly what we needed as we enter the festive period for yet another year with restrictions and uncertainties. A reminder that fishing is an escape from the worries and stress that surround us in such unpredictable times! It was a week full of laughter, Christmas spirit, great sport, and p.b and fishery record-breaking fish!

For most of the week we have had flat calms, dreich weather, freezing cold temperatures and heavy fog, to some that would sound miserable, but it brought along with it so much hilarity! In the heaviest of fog anglers could not see the others on the opposite side of the water, nor could we see anyone from the cabin! Splashing could be heard, but it was unknown whether it was fish on, fish moving or anglers falling in! Cries of “big fish” could be heard, but all we could do initially was stand at the door and shout, “what side are you on? where are you?!” and run till we found the anglers with the bends in their rods or big fish in their nets! Anglers fishing with friends often had no idea how their friends were getting on, who was winning! Even though the anglers were cold, the fog brought so much fun and mystery with it!

The fish were caught at a variety of depths from the surface to 10ft down, and on a wide variety of techniques and flies from dries on a floating line, lures on a fast intermediate, to static under a sight indicator. For this time of the year, in such variable and cold conditions, the sport was exceptional, and only a few blanks were recorded.

We would like to take this time to thank you all for your support over the last year and wish you all a very merry Christmas and new year!

Never bring the fish onto the banking or podiums as this removes the protective slime, increasing the chances of infections and diseases.

Thank you to all of the anglers this week, we look forward to seeing you again!

TIGHT LINES FOR THE WEEK AHEAD!

BURNHOUSE LOCHAN WEEKLY REPORT

Friday 03/12/2021 – Friday 10/12/2021

It may be freezing cold, but this time of the year brings so much beauty with it. The frozen landscape that welcomes the anglers so beautiful that it sets them up perfectly for the day ahead, the frost highlights the intricate workings of the cobwebs, the flat calm water mirrors the magnificent colours of the sunrise, the glistening ground below your feet crunches as you walk and has captured the movements of the wildlife that frequent the water. Winter is here and it can be a test to your will power at times but take a deep breath of that crisp air and appreciate the beauty of your surroundings.

The best sport continues to come from the shallows, the wild browns are spawning in the burn, and it is attracting the fish in large numbers. THE B.B.C (BUNG BASHERS CLUB)

They arrived before the sun came up and brought their awesome banter and cheesiest Christmas jumpers and hats. Andy Richmonds outfit caused hilarity lighting up the dark morning with the numerous twinkling-coloured lights on his hat and jumper, an almost spooky sight as he walked around the dark shores looking for his first fishing spot, like something from a U.F.O movie.

The weather started off beautiful and the fish welcomed the anglers with a spectacular morning rise! But it wasn’t to last, the weather took a turn for the worse, even the weather forecasters didn’t predict it! The freezing cold strong winds and heavy rain were a test to their will power! But they stuck it out, determined to make the most of their day, some of the anglers had travelled up from Newcastle and it would have been a waste to give in!

They took advantage of the roaring log fire in the BBQ hut at half time to dry off, heat up and have a good bit of banter, a proper catch up for the friends that the borders divide. Though most struggled at the thought of leaving that comfort, relaxation, and warmth, they bravely once again ventured out into the horrific weather outside for the remainder of their day.

Despite the challenging conditions there were some brilliant returns. We take our hats off to them for braving that weather!

  • RICHARD BAIN – “ I will definitely be back!” he safely returned 17 using “practically everything he put on!” bugs, eggs, shimmies, he caught on so many things he couldn’t remember them all.
  • ANDY RICHMOND – Safely returned 14, the best saving itself till last, the biggest fish of the day, a stunning 11lb rainbow! Millennium bugs and shimmies fished static under a sight indicator proving very successful for him.

  • JIM SKILLING – Safely returned 9 using snakes and apps on various lines.
  • DAVID NEILSON – Safely returned 8 using a black rabbit on a floating line and shammies fished static under a sight indicator.
  • PAUL SNAITH – Safely returned 5 using shammies fished static under a sight indicator.
  • DREW MILLAR – You always know when Drews on the water, that brilliant loud belly aching laugh echoes through the hills lol. He caught the first fish of the day and went on to safely return 5 using a yellow shammy and millennium bugs fished static under a sight indicator.
  • KENNY SKILLING – Safely returned 4 using eggs and squirmies fished static under a sight indicator.
  • ROB SHARPE – Safely returned 2 using eggstacy worms fished static under a sight indicator.
  • THOMAS FLEMMING – Safely returned 2 using millennium bugs fished static under a sight indicator.

  • RONNIE SHEPHERD – The fish were at their games, GET YOUR REVENGE the next time!

A total of 79 fish was caught between 12 anglers, a rod average of 6.58, exceptional given the very  challenging conditions!

Thank you for choosing Burnhouse for your end of year group booking. We hope to welcome you all back.

  • Unhook the fish as quickly as possible, keep the fish in the water. Never bring the fish onto the banking or podiums as this removes the protective slime, increasing the chances of infections and diseases.

Thank you to all of the anglers this week, we look forward to seeing you again!

BURNHOUSE LOCHAN WEEKLY REPORT

 Friday 26/11/2021 – Friday 03/12/2021

Those mild mornings have been replaced by beautiful wintery scenes. We had our first snow fall and the first major storm. Winter has finally arrived!

Its not just the breath-taking sunrises that have welcomed our anglers this week, the fish are putting on a show with spectacular morning rises that leave the anglers excited and eager to get on the water as quickly as possible. The fish are still sitting in the top 3 feet of water and the floating line is still having the most success, quite remarkable for this time of the year.
