Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 19/11/2021 – Friday 26/11/2021

The Burnhouse bigs are still causing a stir amongst anglers, yet another week of rod breaking, line snapping, P.B smashing, adrenaline filled fun that keeps our anglers coming back for more!

The weather could not have been more variable, picturesque flat calms one hour to gale force winds the next and unseasonably mild temperatures to freezing! Where we would usually see the fish take to the depths, surprisingly, most fish are still being caught on floating lines and dry flies are still having success too much to the delight of those anglers that love nothing more than to watch the fish snatch their flies from the surface.

FISH OF THE WEEK –  This weeks top spot goes to KAROL WERSZANSKI with a 16LB rainbow. Well done, Karol, you are this weeks winner of our winter big fish competition! Your free all-day c&r ticket and scrumptious steak pie awaits you!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – This weeks top 3 flies were EGGS, YELLOW DANCERS and BUZZERS.

Other successful flies were cormorants, fabs, shimmies, polar bears, orange lures, squirmies, apps, damsels, orange Montana nymph, Donnay Mac blob, diawl bachs, dogs bollocks, midget gem, black poodle, millennium bugs, mop flies, Ally McCoist, elk hair sedge, eggstacy worm, blobs, spiders, shammies, okay dokey, bibios, Gio Van Rabbit, pink snake, black badger, and a double humpy.

  • If you have to handle the fish do so with wet hands, never with gloves on, this avoids removing the protective slime.
  • If the hook is too deep to be removed, cut the line as close to the hook as possible.
  • Avoid squeezing the fish as this can cause damage to internal organs.
  • Take time to recover the fish, be patient as this can take some time especially in warmer weather. Support it gently until the fish is strong enough to swim away from you.

If you are struggling to recover a fish please call the bailiff for assistance, the decision to kill any fish whilst on catch and release must only be made by the bailiff.

Thank you to all of the anglers this week, we look forward to seeing you again!

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 12/11/2021 – Friday 19/11/2021

Despite the variable temperatures and at times very difficult conditions, Burnhouse was on fire this week! Only 6 blanks were recorded, a total of 420 fish were caught over 5 days with a rod average of 5.83, 18 doubles were landed and 10 P.Bs smashed! It was a week to remember!

The large stocking of double figure fish worked wonders, surprisingly though, out of the 18 doubles caught this week only 6 were fresh stockies, the resident bigs came out to play in full force!

This week we also held the final for the 2021 Caffrey cup, in support of MacMillan Cancer Support. What a day! The weather did not favour the anglers at all, bright sunshine, no cloud cover all day and not even a little breeze! But they brought their A games with them, they knew exactly what to do in these conditions! The competition was tight right from the start, the fish just kept getting bigger and bigger and so were the anglers smiles! At half time, the finalists took the time to relax and rest their arms. As they sat there in the sunshine, without their coats, enjoying the BBQ food and chatting amongst themselves, it was hard to believe that this was November and not still the summertime! After lunch, the fishing slowed a little, either the fish switched off or the anglers were too full to concentrate! However, when the sun began to lose its power, and the temperature began to drop the fish came out to play again! The last 2 pegs decided the competition and there were some spectacular come backs! No blanks were recorded and a total of 197 fish were caught, with a rod average of 8.95! 12 double figure fish were landed and 4 P.Bs beaten! Once again the competition was so tight that the time of first fish decided the final results! You can read the results after the catch report.

FISH OF THE WEEK –  This weeks top spot goes to ALLAN MELVILLE with a 15.8LB rainbow. Well done, Allan, you are this weeks winner of our winter big fish competition! Your free all-day c&r ticket and scrumptious steak pie awaits you!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – This weeks top 3 flies were EGGS, YELLOW DANCERS and SQUIRMY WORMS.

Other successful flies were buzzers, cormorants, orange dancer, damsels, dogs bollocks (honestly the name of some of these flies these days!) , black & green lures, Kate McLaren, grub imitations, diawl bachs, fabs, white lures, PTN, cats whiskers, Pittsford pea, okay dokey, mermaids, black pennell, daddies, hoppers, pink rabbits, apps, cinnamon & gold, F*ck ups, snakes, Rob Roy, bibios, bunny leech, mop flies, shimmies, shammies, blobs, crunchers, nomads, CDCs, Ally McCoist, minky and various dries.

  • JOCK MCDOUGALL – Just 1 podium down from Bruce and only an hour after Bruce lost his double, Jock also lost a double figure rainbow right at the net, this time a much larger double. On his back cast he caught the gorse bush, and while trying to free his fly he lost his footing on the steep embankment, falling headfirst into the gorse bush! His head just inches from the water, he was stuck! Alan could hear his cries for help but had no idea where it was coming from as George was completely out of sight! When walking round, all that could be seen was 2 wee feet sticking out of the gorse bush! A hilarious sight, that after we helped him out, we all had a really good laugh about it! He safely returned 2 rainbows using pink and green squirmies fished static under a sight indicator. After an epic battle, the gorse bush safely released George, with a few minor cuts!

BURNHOUSE LOCHAN WEEKLY REPORT

Friday 05/11/2021 – Friday 12/11/2021

The weather is still very mild for this time of the year, anglers are making the most of it while it lasts.

The fish have been on the chase this week, those larger fish are causing excitement as they are feeding in the margins and in the shallow water gorging on the sticklebacks which are now in their stunning winter colours. Magnificent to see but also frustrating for the anglers as they tried desperately to try to temp them with their flies. It wont come as much of a surprise that flies imitating fry are having the most success at the moment, from lures to daiwl bachs and small wets, the fish are feeding up for winter and the fry are their main targets.

BURNHOUSE ON TOUR

The Burnhouse team and some of the regulars have decided to start venturing out to other fisheries, our aim is to try to visit at least 1 fishery a month. This week Alan Smith and I (May) ventured off to Eden Springs fishery in Coupar, a relatively new fishery, for a day out on the boat. What a venue! Even though my hooks were clearly made of rubber, we managed 25 fish to the boat, all fish were in stunning condition and put up a good fight. The fishery has a lot of interesting features, Islands, lots of nooks and crannies, this was definitely one of the best boating venues we have been to. A massive thank you to the staff, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and I’m sure you will be seeing us again soon!

SAFE CATCH AND RELEASE PROCEDURE

  • Only use single, barbless hooks. Strictly no multiple hook snakes, double or treble hooks. Not just for catch and release but for kill tickets too.
  • Due to the size and strength of our fish we ask that ALL anglers use a minimum of 8lb line, this is to reduce the number of fish being lost and over played.
  • Bring the fish to the net as quickly as possible. Over playing a fish causes stress and exhaustion and decreases the chance of survival.
  • Unhook the fish as quickly as possible, keep the fish in the water. Never bring the fish onto the banking or podiums as this removes the protective slime, increasing the chances of infections and diseases.

Friday 29/10/2021 – Friday 05/11/2021

WHAT A WEEK! There has been quite a variation in the weather this week from frosty mornings and flat calms to unseasonably mild temperatures, severe flooding, and gale force winds. For the majority of the week the fishing was exceptional, the fish feeding up heavily for the winter months, it appeared as if anglers could do nothing wrong and they were having some of the best sport they have ever experienced, we even witnessed a new fishery record! Other days the anglers had to work a little harder to find the right depth, but once they did those great returns were once again achieved.

A massive well done to Kevin Jenkinson who has the new fishery record for most fish caught, this now stands at 41 fish! I wonder how long it will take to beat that!

FISH OF THE WEEK –  This weeks top spot goes to DAVID FISHER with a 10.5lb rainbow. Well done, David, you are the first winner of our winter big fish competition! Your free all-day c&r ticket and scrumptious steak pie awaits you!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – This weeks top 3 flies were BUZZERS, ORANGE LURES and DAIWL BACHS .

Other successful flies were mop flies, fry poppers, fabs, shimmy worms, pin fry imitations, yellow owls, dinky, blobs, eggs, suspended buzzers, yellow dancer, ptn, cormorants, hoppers, spiders, various dries, grub imitations, damsels, Ally McCoist, viva, humongous, pink lure, cats whiskers, squirmy, zonkers, eggstacy worms and bunny leach.

CATCH REPORT

  • PAUL PRICE & JIM MCINTYRE – What can I say about these 2……. it’s never a dull day when they are on the water! The day started out like it usually does, 2 mates having a good laugh and catching plenty fish between them, what happened next was comedy gold! Jim hooked into fish number 7 to draw with Paul. Paul gets up to cast but doesn’t notice the chair has moved to the side slightly, 2 legs are now balancing on the side of the podium, he sits back down, and the chair tipped him in the water. He makes his way to the side, but is buckled over, when May asked Jim (who is still playing fish number 7) if Paul is ok, he replies, whilst laughing “aye he’s fine” When Paul still didn’t get up May made her way over to him to see if he was ok, thankfully it wasn’t the heart attack it looked like! He had hurt his ribs. Then a fish took his fly that was still in the water, his rod shot off the platform and May jumped in to get it before it disappeared, all while Jim is still playing fish number 7! May gets back onto the platform and keeps playing the fish whist on her back trying to get the freezing cold water out her boots and when Paul had recovered, he landed fish number 8! It must be such a relief for Paul to know that Jim will always look after him in an emergency, unless he has a fish on! PAUL PRICE – 8 fish using orange and green mop flies, JIM MCINTYRE – 7 fish using a green & white mop fly.

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 22/10/2021 – Friday 29/10/2021

The team have been working very hard over the last 6 months to improve the water clarity and that hard work is paying off! There is a noticeable difference that has the anglers praising our efforts! Even after the heavy rain and flooding the water clarity was impressive! We will continue our hard work, next year will be even better!

The heavy rain kept a lot of anglers away this week, but the best sport came in the worst conditions! Very few blanks were recorded, a total of 311 fish were caught in 4 days and the rod average was a very respectable 5.01! Most of the fish were caught just below the surface.

This week we had the pleasure of welcoming 2 groups for their end of season competitions, The MMM joinery group and The Firefighters. Both days very different to each other but both seen most of their anglers catching fish! Thank you for choosing Burnhouse, we hope to see you all again! You can read how their days went after the catch report.

BURNHOUSE LOCHAN WEEKLY REPORT 15/10/21

Friday 08/10/2021 – Friday 15/10/2021

It wasn’t a week for the fair-weather anglers, but those who braved the wind and rain seen some brilliant sport!

The fish are on the chase, and you don’t have to cast out far to catch, most are being caught right at the sides where the fish are feeding up on fry in the weed beds. The larger specimens are becoming easier to hook, though we are still seeing most escape capture, stronger lines are definitely needed for this time of the year when the takes are more aggressive, and the fish are fighting harder than in previous months.

It was a very wet and miserable day for the second qualifying round of the 2021 Caffrey Cup, in support of Macmillan cancer support. The anglers were soaked to the skin, but it didn’t dampen their spirits, they were there to have a great day, supporting a great cause and a great day was exactly what they had! At half time they enjoyed a delicious lunch and took advantage of the opportunity to dry off around the log burning fire in the BBQ hut. Though the conditions were difficult, a total of 118 fish were caught. The competition so tight again that 1st place came down to the time of first fish caught, and only 9 minutes separated them! The last 2 qualifying places, shared by 6 anglers also came down to the time of first fish! Another truly exciting competition!

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

 Friday 01/10/2021 – Friday 08/10/2021

Even though the temperatures are still mild for this time of the year, there is no doubt that autumn is in full swing. The landscape is changing to those beautiful autumnal colours creating a picturesque backdrop to the Lochan. The weather has also become unpredictable, glorious sunshine one minute and torrential rain the next.

The fish have started feeding up for the winter when their metabolism slows down, meaning that the fishing has become a lot easier. Anglers are experiencing the thrill of the chase and aggressive takes, those “big bow waves” from our larger fish, in particular, adding to the adrenaline rush.

Friday 24/09/2021 – Friday 01/10/2021

What a brilliant week we have just had, the dreich weather providing some spectacular sport! The conditions finally favour the anglers! The bigger specimen fish are finally making the nets and 296 fish were caught in just 5 days not including fish caught by staff or by anglers who caught but didn’t report back to the bailiff at the end of their sessions. Some days were quiet due to the rain, but the rain is exactly what we want, so the next time you see the rain pouring from the sky remember that some of the best sport comes in conditions like that, pop your waterproofs in your bag and come fishing!

We could not have asked for a better start to our collaboration with Woodhall flies to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. On September the 25th we held our first qualifying round for the 2021 Caffrey cup and to say that we are happy with how it went would be an understatement! The conditions could not have been more perfect, and the fish turned up on the day! The competition was so tight that it kept everyone on their toes and the adrenaline flowing! It was a day to remember, brilliant company, good laughs, a tasty lunch and amazing fishing! We thank everyone who participated, our helpers and everyone who has contributed so far! We have already raised an impressive amount and we still have 2 competitions, over a month and several fundraisers to go! We are immensely proud to be part of an angling community that is uniting for this great cause!

WEEKLY REPORT 24th September 2021

Weekly Report – Friday 24th  September 2021

Burnhouse Lochan Fishery – Weekly Report:

17/09/2021 – 24/09/2021

After a long, hard, hot, and very dry summer; The weather we have all been waiting for is finally here! The fish are on the chase, the takes are becoming more aggressive, and they are fighting hard; even the 3lb rainbows have been taking anglers into their backing line.

  • Unhook the fish as quickly as possible, keep the fish in the water. Never bring the fish onto the banking or podiums as this removes the protective slime, increasing the chances of infections and diseases.
