Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report.

WEEK ENDING SUNDAY 11th OF SEPTEMBER.

What an exciting week we have had at the Lochan. With the cooler temperatures we decided it was time for a big specimen stocking. We were like kids on the run up to Christmas waiting for them to arrive and when they did, we were blown away with how beautiful and impressive in size they were, the quality and condition was outstanding! Big rainbows, blues, tigers, and MASSIVE browns, fin perfect with tails so big that the lucky anglers will be in for an epic battle! We have been watching, waiting, with the camera and scales ready to go, but, as yet only one of the rainbows and two of the tigers have made the net! They join the many tigers from the last stocking that still haven’t been caught. The wait continues!

The weather has been all over the place this week, glorious sunshine, and flat calms one day and blowing a hooley with torrential rain the next. This has at times meant that the fishing was difficult, however there has still been some phenomenal returns. The top 4 in the weeks top 20 dominated by 2 men, our Burnhouse Team captain Donald and his teammate Alan, both determined to beat one another! Its great to see the fun rivalry that the top 20 has created, not just between them, we have seen it from many more anglers, its hilarious sitting back and listening to the banter.

FISH OF THE WEEK –  The top spots go to JOCK HUNTER with rainbow weighing 12lb! Well Done, Jock!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – The top 3 flies were BUZZERS, BEETLES, and YELLOW DANCERS.

Other successful flies were nymphs, diawl bachs, hoppers, suspended buzzers, sedgehogs, double humpy, cdcs, spiders, shipmans, daddies, top hats, snatchers, crunchers, nothing fly, deer hair emergers, f-fly, sedge, ants, Griffiths gnat, black pennell, cormorants, bibio, damsels, white rabbit, green & black lures, apps, pink lures, eggs, shammies, shimmies, mop flies, pink dancer, black & blue lures, orange fritz, fabs, black rabbit, goldie, blobs, squirmies, floating fry, straggle cats and humongous lures.

HOTSPOTS –  The far bank and the bridge shallows.

BEST LINE – Floating.

TOTAL NUMBER OF FISH CAUGHT – 317

  • JOCK HUNTER – Had a brilliant father and son fishing trip. He safely returned 9 fish including a 12lb rainbow using diawl bachs, black & green fritz and a black & blue lure he designed and calls a blue thunder on various lines. His son William bagged his 3 fish and caught his first tiger, and what a beauty it was weighing 7lb and gave him a fight he will never forget.
  • STEVIE OBRIAN – Loves his dry flies and after discovering on his first visit that Burnhouse is a great top of water fishery, he returned for the second time in a week. He safely returned 9 fish using a nothing fly, top hats and deer hair emergers on a floating line.
  • GREG HOWE – Safely returned 9 fish using squirmies fished static under a sight indicator.
  • TONY STEEN – Safely returned 8 fish including a beautiful tiger using pink lures, red and olive apps, and a double humpy all on a floating line. Tony said he had an incredible night, that he could easily have had 20 fish if he had landed all of the fish from the offers he had.
  • CHIC MCGREAVIE – Safely returned 8 fish using shammies fished static under a sight indicator.
  • ANDY MCALPINE – When everyone else ran into the cabin, Andy stood out in the torrential rain and faced the strong winds and his determination not to let the weather ruin his day paid off! He safely returned 8 fish including a double hook up using a yellow dancer and cormorants on a floating line. He also lost many more. He’s a wee legend is oor Andy, made of tougher stuff!
  • MARK HOPKINS – On his first visit to Burnhouse safely returned 8 fish using various lures and an orange fab on a midge tip line.
  • TOMMY TURNBULL – Safely returned 8 fish using buzzers and nymphs on a floating line. The biggest fly in his box is a size 16! He only ever uses very small naturals, and it has always worked for him at Burnhouse.

  • TOMMY HOUSTON – Safely returned 7 fish all fish caught on a yellow dancer on a floating line.
  • TOBY ROUGHTON – Made a last min decision to pop over for the evening session, he safely returned 7 fish using a silver humongous, buzzers and beetles all on a floating line. With every cast you could hear Toby cursing the fish as they were chasing and teasing him.
  • ALAN MEEK – Safely returned 6 fish using cdcs and diawl bachs all on a floating line. He also congratulated me for making the Scottish team, saying that it must be the years of watching him fish lol.
  • TONY DEEB – Had a brilliant day out with his son Cameron, and though the conditions were less than ideal with the bright sunshine and flat calm between them they safely returned 11 fish! Tony landing 6 and Cameron 5 using eggs and damsels on various lines.
  • EDWARD JONES – Safely returned 6 fish using the Burnhouse faithful a Griffith gnat, bibio, damsel and an orange daddy all on a floating line.

A massive THANK YOU to all of the anglers that have joined us this week, without your support and custom there would be no Burnhouse. We look forward to welcoming you back.

SAFE CATCH AND RELEASE PROCEDURE

  • Only use single, barbless hooks. Strictly no multiple hook snakes, double or treble hooks. Not just for catch and release but for kill tickets too.
  • Due to the size and strength of our fish we ask that ALL anglers use a minimum of 8lb line, this is to reduce the number of fish being over played or snapping anglers line.
  • Bring the fish to the net as quickly as possible. Over playing a fish causes stress and exhaustion and decreases the chance of survival.
  • Unhook the fish as quickly as possible, keep the fish in the water. It is strictly forbidden for anglers bring the fish onto the banking or podiums as this removes the protective slime, increasing the chances of infections and diseases. Fish cannot breathe out of the water, any time spent out of the water drastically reduces the survival rate!
  • If you have to handle the fish do so with wet hands, never with gloves on, this avoids removing the protective slime.
  • If the hook is too deep to be removed, cut the line as close to the hook as possible.
  • Avoid squeezing the fish as this can cause damage to internal organs.
  • Take time to recover the fish, be patient as this can take some time especially in warmer weather. Support it gently until the fish is strong enough to swim away from you.

If you are struggling to recover or unhook a fish please call the bailiff for assistance, the decision to kill any fish whilst on catch and release must only be made by the bailiff.

The Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

WEEK ENDING SUNDAY 4th OF SEPTEMBER.

The reports are back!

We would like to thank you all for your patience while we took a break from the reports, this allowed us the time for some major maintenance, upgrades and repairs around the fishery as well as getting the cottage at High Forrester Quarter ready for accommodation. We have been working very hard this summer to ensure that Burnhouse is the best it can be.

The summer fishing was a lot easier this year than last, we were fortunate enough to have cold spells and plentiful rainfall between the heat waves.

In the last few weeks with the colder air and the drop in water temperature we have seen an increase in the catch returns, however with the constant variation in weather and air pressure some days have proved a little trickier than others, testing the skills and knowledge of the anglers.

There are still plentiful natural hatches keeping the top of water sport exciting and with daddy season in full swing it’s not hard to guess that they are in the top 3 flies. The fish have also started to gorge on the fry so its time for those fry imitations to come out to play!

FISH OF THE WEEK –  The top spots go to BRIAN SKINNER with rainbow weighing 12lb! Well Done, Brian!

SAFE CATCH AND RELEASE PROCEDURE

  • Only use single, barbless hooks. Strictly no multiple hook snakes, double or treble hooks. Not just for catch and release but for kill tickets too.
  • Due to the size and strength of our fish we ask that ALL anglers use a minimum of 8lb line, this is to reduce the number of fish being over played, or snapping anglers line.

If you are struggling to recover a fish please call the bailiff for assistance, the decision to kill any fish whilst on catch and release must only be made by the bailiff.

Burnhouse Lochan Fortnight Report

Friday 22/04/2022 – Friday 06/05/2022

The top of water sport has been exceptional in the last two weeks, as the insect life increases! The dry flies are taking over the catch report and the anglers were ecstatic; nothing beats the adrenaline rush of a surface take or bow waves chasing after your fly. This truly is the most fun time of the year for anglers!

We have had an incredibly busy fortnight at the fishery, all repairs have been finished on the holding tank, the gate has also been fixed so there is no more wrestling with it on arrival and the new door has been fitted on the cabin, after the last one decided it didn’t want to be a door anymore and wouldn’t open or close without a good fight! This week we have plans to widen and repair the platforms in the shallow water and add the finishing touches to the recently rebuilt platforms. We keep busy, to keep you happy!

We also welcomed the Alexanders fly club and hosted the Jessica Jane Memorial Trophy Day, you can see how they got on at the end of the catch report.

THE JESSICA JANE MEMORIAL TROPHY

After suffering the devastating loss of their beautiful daughter Jessica, Matt and Sarah Pidcock wanted to keep their daughters memory alive by raising money for Great Ormand Street Childrens Hospital and Midlands Air Ambulance.

Jessica was the most beautiful girl to grace this world, born with Down Syndrome, 2 holes in her heart and a leaking valve, she overcame everything including open heart surgery at Great Ormond Street and seemed to be recovering more and more each day.

Sadly on Tuesday 16th November 2021 at 3 days short of 10 months old Jessica unexpectedly grew her Angel wings.

As a parent and a friend, Andy McRoberts from MCR flies could not let this unimaginable loss go without doing all he could to support them by trying to support their fundraiser for these two fantastic charities. “It does not bare to think of such a loss for those of us who are parents and especially in the month of Christmas!”

Together with Andrew Humphries from Blob and Buzzer, they planned a fishing competition to raise more for the two charities. Months of planning and hard work paid off, and not only did the anglers enjoy the competition but they also raised more money than they had aimed for. It was such a success, that the Jessica Jane Memorial Trophy will be a yearly event. I hope you are all incredibly proud of what you have achieved.

Though we met under heart-breaking circumstances, it was nice to meet you all, and an honour for us to cater this special event. Anything we can do to help with next year’s fundraising let us know.

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 15/04/2022 – Friday 22/04/2022

The milder temperatures at the beginning of the week were perfect for insect hatches, creating phenomenal top of water sport for our anglers! However this wasn’t to last, the wind switched to a strong, bitterly cold easterly, combined with the bright sunshine the fish went a little deeper for the remainder of the week.

Though fish could be caught around the full Lochan the wind created hot spots with podiums 18 – 22 in the cabin side bay holding a lot of fish, however with the wind gusting up to 20mph only a few anglers braved the bay for long. Other hot spots included podiums 1 and 2 with a lot of fish holding in the corner between, and podiums 4 and 5 the sluice corner.

FISH OF THE WEEK – This weeks top spot goes to DONALD FORBES with rainbow weighing 14.4lb! Well Done, Donald!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – The top 3 flies were BUZZERS, APPS and BEETLES.

Other successful flies were emergers, diawl bachs, cdcs, suspended buzzers, yellow owls, double humpy, klinkhammers, shipmans, spiders, caddis, daddies, adams, hoppers, crunchers, poachers, fabs, cormorants, black pennell, viva, bibio, damsel, Apache, stalking bugs, okay dokie, shimmies, yellow dancer, pink lures, blobs, red fritz, zonkers, eggs, snakes, squirmies and various dries.

  • BRUCE DYSART – Safely returned 16 fish using shimmies, bibio, double humpy and a yellow dancer on a floating line. He had caught all species of fish at Burnhouse but needed a blue and a brown to complete the set, he achieved this with 1 cast! A double hook up with both!

SAFE CATCH AND RELEASE PROCEDURE

  • Only use single, barbless hooks. Strictly no multiple hook snakes, double or treble hooks. Not just for catch and release but for kill tickets too.
  • Due to the size and strength of our fish we ask that ALL anglers use a minimum of 8lb line, this is to reduce the number of fish being lost and over played.

If you are struggling to recover a fish please call the bailiff for assistance, the decision to kill any fish whilst on catch and release must only be made by the bailiff.

THE BURNHOUSE PAIRS COMPETITION

A massive thank you and well done to all of the anglers that took part in the pairs competition.

The first half proved very difficult with the bright sun and flat calm; fish were being caught but it was a challenge!

The clouds rolled in as the anglers were eating lunch, along with a nice breeze, a sigh of relief could be heard amongst them all as the fish started rising! These conditions remained and the fish started biting in the second half!

The pair that ended up winning the competition, ate lunch thinking that there was no way they were in contention for any trophy other than the wooden spoon, they only had 2 fish in the first half!

Though the sport increased in the afternoon, the number of fish caught by pairs were less than they had caught individually when practicing during the week. To be expected though after the water had fished incredibly well all week and given the difficult conditions. Despite this, in true Burnhouse style, the laughter and banter never stopped, and it was yet another memorable and enjoyable day. And in true Maisy style, I fed them till they were fit to burst!

A total of 101 fish were caught, 3 double figure rainbows, 2 tigers, 2 browns and another victim claimed by Houdini.

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report.

Friday 01/04/2022 – Friday 08/04/2022

That bitterly cold wind remained with us this week. The buzzers hatches, though still magnificent in calmer weather slowed slightly in the cold wind! The number of anglers reduced this week, as at times the wind was so cold and strong it felt like it could have cut through you, there were days that only hardened anglers ventured out. There was a mixed bag of results this week, where some had their best ever days fishing and a lot of magnificent returns were recorded, others struggled. Anglers willing to move, to persevere until they found what was right, were the anglers rewarded with the larger returns. Keep changing your flies, keep changing your depth and keep moving until you find the fish and you could have some of the best sport you have experienced!

What was consistent this week was the feedback on the condition and fight from our fish. So, to answer the two most common questions this week, why are our fish in such good condition, and why are they so strong? It all begins with the right supplier, they provide us with grade A fish, if there were any fish in bad quality, we would send them back, they would never enter our water, however since I took over the manager’s position, I haven’t had to do this, the quality has always been fin perfect, a testament to our supplier! We test our water quality regularly and over the last 2 years have significantly improved the water clarity. Our water is not stagnant, our fishery is fed from the Skipperton burn, there is a constant flow of water in and out of our Lochan and strong under currents, particularly significant after heavy rainfall, meaning that the fish we buy in strong, continue to grow in strength! Our burn fed water, reed beds and natural and beautiful surroundings provide ample insect and fry life for our fish to gorge on meaning that there is plentiful amounts of natural food for our fish to remain healthy and grow in size. We ensure our water isn’t over fished, we close for 2 days a week giving the fish a rest, and we never fully book the fishery apart from competition days or group bookings, we always keep podiums free to ensure anglers aren’t fishing shoulder to shoulder. We keep up to date records of the fish in and out of the water, if there is a poor turnover, we put measures in place. We quality observe, if there are fish in poor condition they are treated or dispatched of, but they do not go to waste. And, most importantly, we are strict on the fishery rules, these aren’t there to make the fishing harder or less fun but to preserve the quality we are known for! At Burnhouse you pay for quality, and a dedicated team to ensure that quality remains!

FISH OF THE WEEK –  The top spot goes to JOHN BUTLER with rainbow weighing 11.9lb! Well Done,  John!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – The top 3 flies were BUZZERS, APPS and BEETLES.

If you are struggling to recover a fish please call the bailiff for assistance, the decision to kill any fish whilst on catch and release must only be made by the bailiff.

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 25/03/2022 – Friday 01/04/2022

The week started off beautiful, the anglers were enjoying the sunshine and peacefulness of beautiful surroundings with the relaxing sound of springtime in the air, but in true Scottish style that run of good weather came to a freezing cold and unpredictable end. What started with settled weather, ended with all the weather could throw at us! Snow, hail, wind, rain, freezing temperatures and glorious sunshine, sometimes all in one day!

Even though the water had a large stocking, the fishing at times was not necessarily easy, with variable conditions, and the abundance of insect hatches, anglers had to get it right! Once they found the right flies at the right depths larger returns were achievable, and many again reported their best days fishing! Anglers setting up multiple rods for a quick change in the variable weather had the most success, when the depth of the fish could change from the surface to deep in a matter of minutes.

Though the fish were caught all over the lochan, the top spots this week were platforms 1-4 in the deeper water and platforms 18 – 22 in the cabin side bay.

FISH OF THE WEEK –  The top spot goes to TRACY ALLAN with rainbow weighing 10.75lb! Well Done,  Tracy!

FLIES OF THE WEEK – The top 3 flies were BUZZERS, DIAWL BACHS and BEETLES.

Other successful flies were double humpies, nymphs, klink hammers, yellow owls, G&H sedge, emergers, cormorants, sedgehogs, spiders, hares ears, sedges, suspended buzzers, black rabbits, fabs, snakes, apps, black & green fritz, green rabbit, slicks, eggs, eggstacy worms, yellow dancers, and various mini lures.

Burnhouse Lochan Weekly Report

Friday 18/03/2022 – Friday 25/03/2022

Spring is in the air. The anglers have been enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. There have been a lot of hatches this week, giving the fish a plentiful amount to feed on and creating spectacular rises! The natural fly imitations are taking over the catch report and the anglers are experiencing the thrill of the surface take and hard hitting buzzer takes.

Though the days could prove difficult at times with the strong sun, the evenings have consistently produced excellent sport, the big fish in particular going into a feeding frenzy in the evening hours. Many PBs have been smashed this week and many anglers have reported their best days fishing!

The hot spots this week have been the deeper water from podiums 1-6 and the cabin side bay during the day, during the evenings the fish are being caught all over however the shallow water at the bridge has provided the best sport. For those eagle eyed regular anglers that are  wondering why podiums 1-6 are being mentioned in the deeper water, we have re-numbered the podiums starting with number 1 being the big platform in front of the cabin.

This week we also hosted the final of the Quaich competition, you can read how the teams got on after the catch report.

THE FINAL OF THE WINTER QUAICH INTER FISHERY COMPETITION.

Firstly we would like to send our thoughts to the original HCF team who all caught covid, we hope that you are all now on the mend. We were gutted you weren’t there for the final after a few months of getting to know you all and the laughs we had but your replacements were exceptionally good and they did you proud so that should be a comfort!

We were originally meant to host the 3rd heat however the competition had to be cancelled due to flooding, meaning that we had the honour of hosting the final instead.

The weather for the final could not have been more different, anglers were met with bright sunshine and a flat calm. As they tucked into their breakfast rolls jokes were made that they would have preferred the wind and rain! It was set to be a difficult day, made even harder when the wind started blowing from the east, an east wind and sunshine are never a good combination. The conditions certainly did not favour the anglers, but their knowledge and experience shone through and yet again it was a tight competition.

THE BURNHOUSE TEAM

We had a 4 fish advantage after moving ahead of HCF at Bangour, but 4 fish could easily be caught! Our team had to use their knowledge of the water to their advantage. The pressure was on throughout the competition, all teams were catching well despite of the conditions, nobody knew who was ahead. All teams brought their A game, so our team had a challenge on their hands. Our anglers were doing well but they also dropped a lot of fish and with every one you could see their frustration grow, but they dusted themselves off and kept their composure, they wanted the victory!

TEAM CAPTAIN DONALD FORBES – 5 fish

JOHN DONALDSON – 13 fish

ALAN SMITH – 7 fish

AARON KIRKWOOD – 6 fish

JONNO MCDONALD – In the practice sessions he excelled, but on the day he just couldn’t get a fish to the net.

TEAM TOTAL – 31 fish

TEAM NEWHOUSE

STEVEN MCGOWAN – 3 fish

LEN WEAVER – 1 fish

ALLY MCMAHON – 8 fish

RORY STEWART – 4 fish

HENRY MACKIE – 0 fish

 TEAM TOTAL – 16 fish

TEAM BANGOUR

GERRY KING – 1 fish

RONNIE WEIR – 5 fish

RUSSELL DODD – 2 fish

PAUL BEGBIE – 2 fish

TAM BEGBIE – 2 fish

TEAM TOTAL – 12 fish

TEAM HCF

CONNER MOOR – 4 fish

ADAM JUKES – 9 fish

ANDY OBRIAN – 4 fish

STEWART WHITE – 8 fish

COLIN DAVIDSON – 4 fish

TEAM TOTAL – 29 fish

THE FINAL RESULTS

WINNERS – BURNHOUSE – 155 fish

2nd HCF – 149 fish

3rd NEWHOUSE – 117 fish

4th BANGOUR – 101 fish

The Burnhouse team did it! With 2 fish ahead on the day they won by 6 fish! A massive thank you to all of the team, team captain Donald Forbes, John Donaldson, Alan Smith, Aaron Kirkwood, Scot Mitchell, Jonno McDonald, Greg Hoggan and Alex Rook! Every one of you contributed to the victory. It was an absolute joy to watch the team bond, to watch the team grow as you shared your experience, knowledge, and techniques amongst each other and to see you tare each other apart with friendly banter and jokes. You all knew each other before the competition, but now you are a team! Your fishery is very proud from the staff to the regulars, well done to you all, I hope you are as proud of you as we are of you!

Every team started out wanting to win, but this competition wasn’t all about winning it was about the overall experience. It was getting out to the other fisheries, meeting up with people we knew and getting to know new faces and personalities, it was about the belly aching laughs from the dodgy banter and competitive but fun rivalry, all of this during the miserable winter months when the weather would usually have us sitting in the house with our feet up. It was a fun way to spend the winter, exactly what fishing should be about, great sport, great laughs and great memories. I look forward to next years competition.

A massive thank you to Steven McGowan for inviting us to be a part of the Quaich, and for being the genius behind it! It was a thoroughly enjoyable competition, even though im not sure if anyone has figured out how those starting pegs work!

Burnhouse Lochan Fortnight Report

Friday 04/03/2022 – Friday 18/03/2022

Instead of a weekly report this one covers a fortnight, the little break from writing reports allowed us to concentrate on some of the maintenance and improvements to the fishery.

Those trees that threatened to come down on top of cars during the storms have all been felled, they have been cut up into logs to be used in the BBQ hut on days that require that roaring log fire.

The bridge pegs weren’t very practical, anglers would have to walk to the side of the bridge to land fish as the drop was just too high, making it unsafe for anglers and the fish; so we have built two new podiums in the shallow water. This means that the bridge will only be for crossing. We have ordered grip strips for the bridge and plan to have that annoying and unsightly mesh wiring removed over the next few weeks.

The ”bouncy podium” as anglers nicknamed it, notorious for anglers falling into the water because of its unusual shape and disrepair has been completely removed and a new and reinforced podium built on top of the rocks. Nobody should fall in now! The next step is to build a new set of stairs with a handrail down to the podium.

Another podium nicknamed by anglers “the wonky podium” a favourite to many, has also been repaired and reinforced after it was damaged in severe flooding.

Over the next few weeks we hope to add another 2 podiums to the water, in hotspots anglers love to fish from the banking, there is more than enough space for them.

We work hard to make Burnhouse the best it can be, a safe, reliable, relaxing and enjoyable environment for our anglers.

FISH OF THE FORTNIGHT –  The top spots go to ROSS COCHRANE with rainbow weighing 11.3lb and DECLAN WINTERS with a rainbow weighing 12.1lb!  Well Done to both of you!

FLIES OF THE FORTNIGHT – The top 3 flies were BUZZERS, CORMORANTS and APPS.

Other successful flies were adams, spiders, diawl bachs, damsels, cdcs, coch y bonddu, gold head nymphs, hoppers, double humpy, shipmans, foam beetles, bloodworms, pheasant tailed nymphs, viva, catbugs, stalking bugs, shimmies, shammies, eggs, mop flies, fabs, Ally McCoist, covid, dogs bollocks, hot throat mini, green lures, black & green lures, black & blue lures, squirmies, yellow dancer, black rabbits, dinky, various dries and to quote Jim Mcintyre “a hairy caterpillar looking thing.”

THE 3RD HEAT OF THE WINTER QUAICH INTER FISHERY COMPETITION.

BANGOUR FISHERY

After 2 rounds, HCF had moved to a 10 fish lead meaning that the 3rd round was crucial, if they were to move further into the lead it would be unlikely they would be caught. The rest of the teams had a challenge on their hands.

The strong sun and variable wind proved a little difficult, however there were still some brilliant returns. The venue was stunning, facilities impressive and the half time lunch delicious! A thoroughly enjoyable day for all of the anglers and it was the first time we have had a dry day in the competition!

THE BURNHOUSE TEAM

The Burnhouse team got off to a flying start with almost every rod bent in the first hour belonging to one of our team. Even though the fishing slowed for the anglers when the cold wind picked up our team kept catching!

If you are struggling to recover a fish please call the bailiff for assistance, the decision to kill any fish whilst on catch and release must only be made by the bailiff.
