Friday 04/03/2022 – Friday 18/03/2022

Instead of a weekly report this one covers a fortnight, the little break from writing reports allowed us to concentrate on some of the maintenance and improvements to the fishery.

Those trees that threatened to come down on top of cars during the storms have all been felled, they have been cut up into logs to be used in the BBQ hut on days that require that roaring log fire.

The bridge pegs weren’t very practical, anglers would have to walk to the side of the bridge to land fish as the drop was just too high, making it unsafe for anglers and the fish; so we have built two new podiums in the shallow water. This means that the bridge will only be for crossing. We have ordered grip strips for the bridge and plan to have that annoying and unsightly mesh wiring removed over the next few weeks.

The ”bouncy podium” as anglers nicknamed it, notorious for anglers falling into the water because of its unusual shape and disrepair has been completely removed and a new and reinforced podium built on top of the rocks. Nobody should fall in now! The next step is to build a new set of stairs with a handrail down to the podium.

Another podium nicknamed by anglers “the wonky podium” a favourite to many, has also been repaired and reinforced after it was damaged in severe flooding.

Over the next few weeks we hope to add another 2 podiums to the water, in hotspots anglers love to fish from the banking, there is more than enough space for them.

We work hard to make Burnhouse the best it can be, a safe, reliable, relaxing and enjoyable environment for our anglers.

THE 3RD HEAT OF THE WINTER QUAICH INTER FISHERY COMPETITION.

BANGOUR FISHERY

After 2 rounds, HCF had moved to a 10 fish lead meaning that the 3rd round was crucial, if they were to move further into the lead it would be unlikely they would be caught. The rest of the teams had a challenge on their hands.

The strong sun and variable wind proved a little difficult, however there were still some brilliant returns. The venue was stunning, facilities impressive and the half time lunch delicious! A thoroughly enjoyable day for all of the anglers and it was the first time we have had a dry day in the competition!

THE BURNHOUSE TEAM

The Burnhouse team got off to a flying start with almost every rod bent in the first hour belonging to one of our team. Even though the fishing slowed for the anglers when the cold wind picked up our team kept catching!

TEAM CAPTAIN DONALD FORBES – 9 fish

SAFE CATCH AND RELEASE PROCEDURE

  • Only use single, barbless hooks. Strictly no multiple hook snakes, double or treble hooks. Not just for catch and release but for kill tickets too.
  • Due to the size and strength of our fish we ask that ALL anglers use a minimum of 8lb line, this is to reduce the number of fish being lost and over played.
  • Bring the fish to the net as quickly as possible. Over playing a fish causes stress and exhaustion and decreases the chance of survival.
  • Unhook the fish as quickly as possible, keep the fish in the water. It is strictly forbidden for anglers bring the fish onto the banking or podiums as this removes the protective slime, increasing the chances of infections and diseases.
  • If you have to handle the fish do so with wet hands, never with gloves on, this avoids removing the protective slime.
  • If the hook is too deep to be removed, cut the line as close to the hook as possible.
  • Avoid squeezing the fish as this can cause damage to internal organs.
  • Take time to recover the fish, be patient as this can take some time especially in warmer weather. Support it gently until the fish is strong enough to swim away from you.

If you are struggling to recover a fish please call the bailiff for assistance, the decision to kill any fish whilst on catch and release must only be made by the bailiff.
