Friday 12/11/2021 – Friday 19/11/2021

Despite the variable temperatures and at times very difficult conditions, Burnhouse was on fire this week! Only 6 blanks were recorded, a total of 420 fish were caught over 5 days with a rod average of 5.83, 18 doubles were landed and 10 P.Bs smashed! It was a week to remember!

The large stocking of double figure fish worked wonders, surprisingly though, out of the 18 doubles caught this week only 6 were fresh stockies, the resident bigs came out to play in full force!

This week we also held the final for the 2021 Caffrey cup, in support of MacMillan Cancer Support. What a day! The weather did not favour the anglers at all, bright sunshine, no cloud cover all day and not even a little breeze! But they brought their A games with them, they knew exactly what to do in these conditions! The competition was tight right from the start, the fish just kept getting bigger and bigger and so were the anglers smiles! At half time, the finalists took the time to relax and rest their arms. As they sat there in the sunshine, without their coats, enjoying the BBQ food and chatting amongst themselves, it was hard to believe that this was November and not still the summertime! After lunch, the fishing slowed a little, either the fish switched off or the anglers were too full to concentrate! However, when the sun began to lose its power, and the temperature began to drop the fish came out to play again! The last 2 pegs decided the competition and there were some spectacular come backs! No blanks were recorded and a total of 197 fish were caught, with a rod average of 8.95! 12 double figure fish were landed and 4 P.Bs beaten! Once again the competition was so tight that the time of first fish decided the final results! You can read the results after the catch report.

On his back cast he caught the gorse bush, and while trying to free his fly he lost his footing on the steep embankment, falling headfirst into the gorse bush! His head just inches from the water, he was stuck! Alan could hear his cries for help but had no idea where it was coming from as George was completely out of sight! When walking round, all that could be seen was 2 wee feet sticking out of the gorse bush! A hilarious sight, that after we helped him out, we all had a really good laugh about it! He safely returned 2 rainbows using pink and green squirmies fished static under a sight indicator. After an epic battle, the gorse bush safely released George, with a few minor cuts!
  • JOHNNY PORTEOUS – Safely returned 1 rainbow using buzzers on a floating line. Thank you for all of your help with the preparation for the charity competition, I know you didn’t want the praise, but we really appreciated everything! Also a massive thank you for your assistance in the safe return of George!

  • STUART MORTIMER – He had many, many offers, which might be very frustrating to some, but Stuart appreciates the great day out and the adrenaline rush those offers provide! SAFE CATCH AND RELEASE PROCEDURE

  • Only use single, barbless hooks. Strictly no multiple hook snakes, double or treble hooks. Not just for catch and release but for kill tickets too.
  • Due to the size and strength of our fish we ask that ALL anglers use a minimum of 8lb line, this is to reduce the number of fish being lost and over played.
  • Bring the fish to the net as quickly as possible. Over playing a fish causes stress and exhaustion and decreases the chance of survival.
  • Unhook the fish as quickly as possible, keep the fish in the water. Never bring the fish onto the banking or podiums as this removes the protective slime, increasing the chances of infections and diseases.
  • If you have to handle the fish do so with wet hands, never with gloves on, this avoids removing the protective slime.
  • If the hook is too deep to be removed, cut the line as close to the hook as possible.
  • Avoid squeezing the fish as this can cause damage to internal organs.
  • Take time to recover the fish, be patient as this can take some time especially in warmer weather. Support it gently until the fish is strong enough to swim away from you.

If you are struggling to recover a fish please call the bailiff for assistance, the decision to kill any fish whilst on catch and release must only be made by the bailiff.

Thank you to all of the anglers this week, we look forward to seeing you again!

TIGHT LINES FOR THE WEEK AHEAD!
